Helping Out Old Friends

Kempinski is using his new position to put pressure on Waste Management in favor of the union.

Germantown Village President Tom Kempinski said today he would seek to sever Germantown’s contract with Waste Management if a strike by the company’s employees causes major problems with garbage pickup.

[...]

Until a year and a half ago, Kempinski was the business agent for the union local that went on strike. However, he said he represented the employees of freight companies and not any waste companies.

I’m sure that his constituents are thrilled.

  1. Seems that the dispute is centered on pensions.

    Gee.

Why does “Teamster Pension Fund” ring a bell?

I heard that Vegas is having trouble attracting people.

    Just coincidence, of course.

I’m not in G-Town, but I privately contract for pickup from Waste Management for residential pickup (this is my alternative to taking it to the town transfer point myself).  As my garbage sits by the curb another day, I guess if I lived in G-Town, I would be thrilled if someone else came along to remove my garbage.

If I were in the union, I would not be thrilled at the prospect of being laid off because G-Town went with a different vendor.

  3. I live in Germantown and my trash was picked up today, one day late. I hardly believe that being one day late for trash since they’ve had the contract is grounds for breaking the contract.

  4. Good for G-Town - sounds like the threat worked.  My garbage is now two days overdue for being picked up.  But I’m an individual customer - I’m sure a village/city would have a lot more leverage than one household.
