  14. Personally, I’d nix the early James Bond movies. But that’s just because I HATE the time period.

If by early, you mean the 70’s films, than I agree 100%. In general, 60s and even many 50s movies I can watch - the good/great ones still hold up very well today. 70’s look just plain silly at best.
Dr. No was great simply for starting it out. From Russia With Love is still the gold standard the rest all are measured against. Anything up to (and including) On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. After that, up to The Living Daylights, the only 70s Roger Moore one worth watching more than once is Live & Let Die. And that’s probably just because of Jane Seymour.

But enough of the OT rant.

Two movies I simply cannot help but watch every single time they’re on:

    Castaway
    For Love of the Game

I’d add Joe vs. the Volcano, but unfortunately, it’s never on. And Shawshank has been removed from that list simply because watching it every time it was on ruined lives and was just too much.

  15. 14 odd post and no one brought up.

We Were Soldiers.  One of the best movies ever!

    i would add
Love the Beast, its on netflix(streaming and dvd) a great movie about a Eric Bana and his love of the Ford Falcon XB Coup!  Great car guy/racing movie.  Also show a lot of love between Eric and his Dad.
The Road Warrior, and Mad Max(ignore the rest)
    The Big Red One(1)
Army of Darkness(Evil dead 1+2(but only in the correct order with the sad endings))

  17. Missed one: Field of Dreams

Any man who doesn’t get choked up when Ray says, “Hey Dad…you wanna have a catch?”, is not a man.

  21. I can honestly say MPP and I do not agree on almost everything; however MPP, you have added some wonderful movies to the list.

    1. The Great Escape (Really, no one added this?)
    2. Glory (WTF)
    3. Blues Brothers
    4. Boondock Saints 1(Not 2, 2=GARBAGE)

Side note: The comment #s haven’t been appearing for me for awhile. Anyone know how to fix?

  22. The Big Lebowski
    Caddyshack
    Animal House
    Major League
    Star Wars (first three released)
    Last of the Mohicans
    Braveheart
Lord of the Rings (all three)
    Band of Brothers
    Pulp Fiction
    Batman Begins, The Dark Knight
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
    Rocky and Rocky 4
    Goodfellas
    The Sting
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
    The Great Escape

I disagree on the Bourne movies.  The second and third ones were unwatchable due to shakeyness.

“Any man who doesn’t get choked up when Ray says, “Hey Dad…you wanna have a catch?”, is not a man.”

To us Wisconsinites, this just sounds retarded.  We don’t say “have a catch” (that’s an east coast/new england thing, right?) we say “play catch.”  Just like we wait “in line” not “on line.”  Also, Field of Dreams isn’t that good.  It’s not even really a baseball movie and they never explain why Kevin Costner is doing an Irish jig on the movie poster.  I do like James Earl Jones’s speech about baseball being the one constant through the years.  That bit is awesome.

  23. I can avoid any of The Godfather movies with ease.  I’ve aways found them boring.  Goodfellas on the other hand…
I agree with Apocalypse Now, even with it’s length I still find it interesting.  A Fistfull of Dollars and For a Few Dollars more must be added to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

The Searchers, Stalag 17, Hud, Bladerunner, and The Third Man are movies I always watch when they are on.

  25. This is a great list, but how do you miss Casablanca, Maltese Falcon, Dr. Strangelove, Gran Torino, Godzilla (the original), and Bambi vs Godzilla?

    Maximum Overdrive.

  27. I think the annoying part is when you forget to list a good movie that someone later lists.

  29. I never said Field of Dreams was a baseball movie.  The Natural is a baseball movie; Field of Dreams is a movie with the theme of baseball running in the background.

  30. Bullet , best car chase ever, Mustang vs Mopar.

One flew over the cuckoo’s nest.

    Smokey and the Bandit

    Training Day

Apollo 13 , when it came out on vhs in surround sound, pure bliss.

  31. “30.Bullet , best car chase ever, Mustang vs Mopar.”

Totally agree (except it’s “Bullitt”, not “Bullett”).  His car loses 6 hubcaps.  Now that’s a car chase.

  34. Anything based on a Tom Clancy book.
    Ronin-best modern car chase scene
Heat-best shootout with cast of heavy-hitters
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels-directed by Guy Ritchie before he became full of himself
Ocean’s Eleven-the original (cool but cheesy) & the remake (just cool)
