Giuliani To Endorse McCain

Sigh...

Rudy Giuliani will endorse John McCain Wednesday in California, two GOP sources familiar with the discussions told CNN Tuesday.

McCain’s campaign manager, Rick Davis, had been in “ongoing discussions” with Rudy Giuliani’s campaign about the former New York mayor ending his run and actively endorsing McCain’s candidacy, according to a GOP official familiar with talks.

  1. It’s a beautiful, beautiful thing.  First, the extreme right said McCain could only win in open primaries.  Now, he wins in a closed primary, and they’re lamenting that he still didn’t win among self-identified conservatives in exit polls.

What’s next?  Are Jim Robinson and the other nutjobs going to lobby that GOP primaries only be open to people who post on Free Republic?

McCain isn’t perfect, but at least his nomination might be a step to running worthless demagogues like Grover Norquist and Pat Robertson out to the hills, along with all their friends who have made a living by exploiting their respective constituencies and turning the Reagan coalition into a gross caricature of what it once was.

Oh, and I hope you enjoyed your vacation.  Given the weather round here, the pictures alone are enough to make anyone jealous.

  2. RS,

Look at it another way.  Welcome to the Right-wing Blogger Squads that will be in daily trench warfare against the Left.

Be careful what you wish for sometimes.  Welcome to Badger Squadron.

(And since I can’t blog anymore, let me just say this.

I saw this coming when Mitt couldn’t stop Huckabee in Iowa.  Pretty much, I started looking for a Huckabee-slayer and McCain was the only one that fit the bill.  Rudy was begining his death spiral in mid-November and wouldn’t be able to counter Huck’s social conservative supporters, Fred was battling for the same social supporters as Huck and the pundits were in love with either Mitt or Rudy and not giving him a chance, and Mitt just spent millions for second place.

Owen, didn’t I mention something like that at the Christmas Party?)

  3. RS:

You will love the McCain/Huck ticket and so will the left.

This will be nothing less than a disaster.

  4. Why does everyone assume McCain’s picking Huckabee?  Is this a Belling/Levin meme?

My money’s on MN Governor Tim Pawlenty.

  5. If I was a conservative I would be distraught, your movement is dead and buried.  R.S. is right, the best thing that could come of the great conservative beat-down of ‘08 is running all the demagogues off into the hills.

It will be interesting to see who McCain’s running mate will be.  A McCain/Lieberman ticket would really make you guys go bananas.

  6. Oh, come now people.    It will be McCain sans Huckabee against Clinton.  The Democrats never fail to pick a miserable VP candidate.  For some rather insignificant reasons Clinton sends leftists into spasms and McCain does likewise on the right.  We’ll get months of tortured analysis before the election of how things they say actually mean what the pundits wish they meant followed by months of more tortured analysis after the election during which every conceivable demographic group will credit themselves with the victory.

It will be entertaining, though.  McCain has a temper and Clinton likes to cry.    That could make for some interesting debates.

  7. I can see why y’all would be mad. A candidate that brings independents and crossovers into your pool of voters? What a disaster. Who needs that kind of trouble?

Seriously, McCain is the only GOP candidate with a prayer of chance of beating the Democratic nominee in November, and you’re complaining that he’s getting the support of the candidates dropping out of the race? Were you really hoping Rudy 9iu11iani was going to be the nominee? I know I was.

If y’all want to rally behind Willard Romney, go right ahead. As someone who had to listen to the endless Kerry flip-flop bullshit, a Romney campaign sounds like a barrel of laughs.

The search for ideological purity is long and leads to electoral defeat in most cases. I’m a Democrat; I should know.

  8. I love all these predictions I’m reading.  I’m quite certain you all are the same people who predicted the Packers whooping up on the Giants.

As DeNiro (Al Capone) said: “You have an all out prize fight, you wait until the fight is over, one guy is left standing - and that’s how you know who won.”

  9. John McCain’s certainty of who he is, and what he believes in, is an essential part of his bid to win the GOP nomination.  While Mitt Romney is trying out his latest new version of himself, we all know where McCain stands.  Like it or not, we know John McCain is solid and comfortable with himself.  The fact that voters continue to reject Mitt Romney is in large part due to the fact they do not like his “do anything to win the White House” value system.

  10. At this point I really have not decided who I would be voting for in November.

However I also just cannot get excited about any of the candidates

Perhaps its just that this election cycle seems like its been dragging on since 2004. And I may just be burned out. :sigh:

The search for ideological purity is a fool’s game.

A staunch conservative nor a staunch liberal will ever win their party’s nomination, and they shouldn’t.  If they did they would get stomped in the general election.  Neither side has all the answer’s, we need people that can appreciate the good things the other side has to say and support them.  Like McCain.

  13. Kevin

Clearly you’ve been away from the Midwest for far to long.

Pawlenty owes his reelection to the fact His opponent (Hatch)
and his running mate had a severe blow up over E-85 and not knowing what it was right before the election.

Polls had Pawlenty losing before that blowup!.

He can’t even bring Minnesota to purple in 08.
    It will be royal Blue.
and get Ready for Senator Franken…..

  14. I lean to the left but I sure like the idea of McCain as the GOP candidate. I could support someone who can form a consensus with the other parties/factions. I admire his service to the Country and believe he will stick by his convictions. Plus he has a hot wife and hotter daughter so the photo ops will be better than Hilary and Bill/Chelsea

  15. I had to research your statements Kurt, I was uninformed.  A quick google search verifies it as fact, McCain’s daughter is hot.

  16. Widder,

It’s been in the CW for at least a year that Pawlenty would be on McCain’s list of Veep choices.

Also, has Franken win that caucus yet.  It doesn’t sound like it’s in the bag.

  17. Certainly cannot vote for McCain the RINO.  Is Fred Thompson out?  I’ll need to start looking at the independents to find a conservative candidate.
