Germantown School Board Primary

There’s a school board race in Germantown tomorrow. John Washburn sums it up well:

The primary is for 3 people vying for the open seat vacated by Kim Fischer. The candidates are:

Sarah Larson
Christina Wolf-Lang, and
Lisa Laskowski

If you want the budget of the Germantown School to balloon with little or no limits, then vote for people in the reverse order listed. If you would like Act 10 tools applied to the Germantown school district budget, then vote for the candidate in the order listed.

In short:

Spendthrift = Laskowski
Act 10 Implementor = Sarah Larson

  1. I am defintely voting for Larson. When asked about school expansion she notes that enrollment is flat, so it is not an issue. The other two are still crying about the last failed referendum.

  3. I guess it’s true; the first casualty of war is truth. Contrary to what Bill has posted on this site, Germantown School Board Candidate Lisa Laskowski DOES NOT favor school expansion, and is not crying over the past failed referenda. She believes that, given flat fiscal times, flat enrollment growth and a 16-to-one student-to-teacher ratio, construction of new school facilities would be foolhardy no, or at any time in the future. This was PUBLISHED in the Voter’s Guide. Please do your homework and have your facts at hand before posting in a public forum.

I’m voting for Laskowski because she is a NON-PARTISAN coalotion builder, who can bridge the divisions on the board. She has a better plan to bridge the budget shortfall—a plan that doesn’t involve program or staff reductions. She believes in the value of education and doesn’t want to see a top-notch school system made less than it presently is.

Trust me on this, guys, Larson is a loose cannon who rather recklessly swings a large budget axe. Elect her and 10 years from now Germantowners will be crying that their kids can’t get a good education and can’t get into top-flight colleges.

  4. From the voters guide on Germantownnow.com

    Laskowski:
    3) How would you suggest the board deal with the space limits in schools for a district with a growing population?

As the community grows, the board will inevitably need to revisit construction of a new elementary school.

    Larson:
    3) How would you suggest the board deal with the space limits in schools for a district with a growing population?

Over the last several years enrollment has been relatively flat, so I don’t believe it’s an immediate problem.

    Wolf-Lang:
    3) How would you suggest the board deal with the space limits in schools for a district with a growing population?

Our schools are crowded! As a top performer, our school district continues to attract more families to the area, just for the educational opportunities. I would support the addition of another elementary school, yet I know this idea was rejected a few years ago.

If someone tells me it isn’t a problem right now - (which it isn’t) then I’m going to go with sanity.

  5. Don’t presume to play the half-truths game!

To be clear, Laskowski said that SOMEDAY the issue of new school construction will need to be revisited . . .  but added that that day is NOT NOW. “

The part you conveniently left off read, “However, given the district’s current fiscal challenges and enrollment levels, the immediate focus should appropriately be on maximizing use of EXISTING instructional space.”  She also recommend reconfiguration of existing buildings and increases in class size.

So if you’re going with sanity, go armed with a complete set of the facts, not half-truths and out-of-context statements.

And while we’re on the subject of SANITY, I wonder how any sane voter could support Sarah Larson after she publicly declared that retirees struggling to get by should just quit whining and take part-time jobs at Wal-Mart!

In my book, the SANE choice is Laskowski!

  6. Vote for whomever you like, but you come off as a huge union shill. Larson is obviously more fiscally conservative than the other candidates. I’d take Laskowski over Wolf-Lang but they are both tax and spenders.

  7. I am no more a union shill than Larson is a shill for her repulsican handlers.

Sarah Larson has never had an original thought, and only parrots the venomous rhetoric fed to her by Dan Knodl (a convicted criminal) and his boss, Gov. Walker.

  8. Hey, have this weekend off after working only 40 hours? Do you get a paid vacation and health care coverage? Is your job secure? ARe you protected from arbitrary mistreatment on the job?  Thank a union. Is your workplace safe and free of health hazards? Do you earn a family-supporting wage? Organized labor put that in place.

Why are you guys so afraid of unions?

  9. An apology is in order. Rep. Dan Knodl is not a criminal. He was onloy charged with a criminal offense after he was caught listing as supporters people who did not endorse his candidacy He subsequently plead guilty to a misdemeanor and paid a fine.

  10. Larson Backs Out of School Board Forum;
    Laskowski Questions Opponent’s Motives, Qualifications

Lisa Laskowski, a candidate for Germantown Board of Education At Large Seat #1 today expressed deep disappointment after learning that her challenger, Sarah Larson, had abruptly withdrawn from a candidates’ forum scheduled for March 14th at the Germantown Community Library.

Larson says she’s backing away from the pre-election question-and-answer session because she doesn’t expect it to be a positive experience for her, and because Germantown Police will be on hand to insure decorum at the public event. In a statement issued late Thursday, Larson said she objects to the police presence because it isn’t a fiscally responsible use of village resources.

“Police maintain order all the time,” said Laskowski. “It’s the very nature of their job. They’ve been on hand for years at parades, public meetings, and sporting events, and it’s awfully strange that Sarah Larson has never objected to their presence before.”

Laskowski, calls her opponent’s excuse a transparent ruse, and charges that Larson is actually shying away from the forum because she’s unprepared to discuss key issues in the campaign.

Laskowski, says Larson’s campaign rhetoric tends be monotone, typically centering on her desire cut school staff, programming and employee benefits. She adds that Larson’s abrupt withdrawal from the forum strongly suggests her opponent lacks the knowledge and presence required to respond to questions on a broader range of issues.

Laskowski says Larson’s decision to run her campaign from outside the public eye speaks volumes about her commitment to transparency in government, and should appropriately cause Larson supporters to reevaluate their preferred candidate.

“The people of this community want leaders,” said Laskowski, “They deserve someone who isn’t afraid of public scrutiny, and won’t shrink from sight when controversial issues are on the table.”

Laskowski says she will continue to prepare for the forum, and intends to be on hand March 14th, along with the candidates for two other seats on the board.

Nothing?  I thought so, Public employee unions have contributed nothing to society.

  14. Since y’all have branded Ms. Laskowski a “spendthrift,” please share details of her fiscal plan. You don’t have any details. You merely presume that she’s a shill for the teachers. It ain’t so!

Laskowski believes in representing the best interests of taxpayers, students and district employees. Unlike her opponentm, she won’t favor one at the expense of the others.

    —Yours in better education,
    Grant W. Moen
