I wonder what it’s like being Gates… he’s serving one president and implementing his policies yet preparing to serve a different president with entirely different policies.
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has ordered plans to be drafted for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention centre, the Pentagon says.
I wonder what it’s like being Gates…
It’s called being a professional.

Posted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on December 19, 2008 at 1546 hrs“locking people away without charging them with a crime” The fate of POWs in every war. That’s why they are called POWs and not criminals. But of course if you don’t get that distinction by now you never will.
As to “refusing to release wrongly detained people” well that’s the whole point of the tribunals. Is there proof of crimes committed by these people or not? It’s called ‘justice.’ But the Left keeps preventing us from meting any out, and so the accused remain in detention while a system for lawfully trying them is worked out. Your side’s objections are only keeping them locked up longer.
As to the actual point of this blog post, before we were taken off-track, naturally President Bush should fire Gates. Then Gates would have to undergo hearings again as to his tenure in office to that point and we could enjoy seeing the new administration defending what he did for the old one.
Posted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on December 19, 2008 at 1547 hrsLloyd makes an excellent point here. The new administration spent much of the last 8 years criticizing national security policy, but is willing to keep one of the architects? How does that work?
Posted by Steve on December 19, 2008 at 1602 hrsHow does that work?
Secretary Gates joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1966 and spent nearly 27 years as an intelligence professional, serving six presidents. During that period, he spent nearly nine years at the National Security Council, The White House, serving four presidents of both political parties.
Perhaps he can see past the nose on his face which seems to be a problem with some of the mouth breathers who post here.
You might want to do just a modicum of homework on the guy before you start rolling out your dim witted partisan pap.

Posted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on December 19, 2008 at 1620 hrsNice ad-hominem attack. The last resort of a scoundrel, I think. The point here is, if national security policy was so bad, why is Obama keeping one of the architects? Just asking the obvious here.
Posted by Steve on December 19, 2008 at 1624 hrsJust asking the obvious here.
What is obvious is that you don’t have a clue what Gates did before December 18, 2006.
He turned GWB down once for the DNI spot.
It is laughable that that you characterize Gates as being an architect for security policy for the current administration and only reveals your own ignorance.
Scoundrel huh, oh me oh my.
Posted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on December 19, 2008 at 1642 hrsIt doesn’t matter what he did before 12/18/06. It matters that you on the Left hated anything GWB did. Now defend keeping a member of his evil empire.
Oh, and please keep showing what an ass you are. No reason to have a reasoned debate on the issue. Please refer to others as stupid and “mouth-breathers”. It helps your credibility so much. Wow…now I believe you are an expert at everything.
Posted by Steve on December 19, 2008 at 1646 hrsLloyd- You apparently missed the 4 Bosnians finally released this week despite a federal court order 6 months ago. Still waiting for the release of the other 3. These 7 individuals were not captured on a battlefield in Afghanistan, but in their homes in Bosnia falsely accused of plotting against the US. Your right sounds like POWs to me.

Posted by Steve on December 19, 2008 at 1816 hrshave a reasoned debate on the issue.
Steve how can we do that when you don’t know what you are talking about?
I furnished a link that would at least give you some idea about what Gates does and why he is so good at it.
Gates is where he is now because precisely because he is not a part of Bush’s band of knuckleheads.
The closest those guys ever got to being an evil empire would have been the comic book variety.
And for the record, I never called anybody stupid.
Ignorant, absolutely.
There is usually a distinct difference between the two, you have done an exceptional job blending them together.
Posted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on December 19, 2008 at 1824 hrsRead carefully….you (that means you)...continue…..to…..miss….the….po int. When you have figured out the point, feel free to let me know.
Posted by Steve on December 19, 2008 at 1854 hrsI see. Doesn’t like Bush = the Left. Nice to know what the definitions are. I guess we’re living in a leftist country.
Posted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on December 20, 2008 at 0935 hrsWhich point is that Steve?
1)
The point here is, if national security policy was so bad, why is Obama keeping one of the architects?
Which is based on a BS premise that Gates is one of the “architects” of the evil empire.
You must be thinking of Cheney, Rumsfeld and my personal favorite, Wolfowitz.
Or is it;
2)
It matters that you on the Left hated anything GWB did. Now defend keeping a member of his evil empire.
Which really has nothing to do with Gates, his qualifications and why he is in his current position but rather brings us back to,
You might want to do just a modicum of homework on the guy before you start rolling out your dim witted partisan pap.
Is there a door #3?
