Gary Sherman

Do you remember my post from yesterday regarding Democratic Assemblyman Gary Sherman?  He is a Democrat who co-sponsored the concealed carry bill, but is not committing to overriding the governor’s veto of that same legislation.  Well… here is a column that he wrote less than three months ago regarding concealed carry.

In my last column, I discussed the Second Amendment and explained why I think that the right to keep and bear arms is as basic and important a part of the Bill of Rights as any other. In this column, I would like to tackle the issue of the concealed carry of handguns.

Suddenly my progressive supporters have become alarmed at my support for concealed carry, in spite of the fact that I have made no secret of my support for this proposal throughout the past six years. In my very first assembly campaign in 1998, I made my support for concealed carry clear and I have not changed my view.

He makes a very strong and well-reasoned argument in support of concealed carry.  I wonder how he can switch his vote and justify it to his constituents.

  1. He’s ... a politician.  Integrity is optional, not must-have.  Cynical, but it’s hard to find integrity in elected office above the village level.

  2. I’m sure it was a tought vote for Gary, as he is fine with guns.  I think he was looking at a larger picture, than just this deviceive issue.  I too often frown on “Politics”, but it is the way we get things done & in this case I’ll bet he thought the Dems had to stick togather with the Gov & party or many other issues would be run through. Personally it isn’t an issue which I care much about & I was actually for the carry law. I do think & object to him getting a drubbing by the special issue & NRA people on the vote. He has been a fine responsive representative.
