French Railway Company Faces Opposition For Transporting Jews to Nazi Camps

Do they have a point?

ORLANDO, Fla. – The French national railway’s hope to bid on the first high-speed tracks in the United States is running into resistance from Holocaust survivors because of the company’s role in transporting Jews to Nazi death camps.

[...]

“Why does this company deserve my tax dollars when they cooperated with the Nazis and let their trains transport people to be murdered?” said Goldstein, 71, who lives in Boca Raton.

SNCF stands for Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer Francais. The company has argued that it had no control over operations when France was under Nazi occupation from 1940 to 1944 and was under orders to transport Jews to death camps. The firm also has said the French government has made an apology and offered reparations, although survivors contend the company itself has never made such amends.

“We plan to have a full disclosure of our records and complete transparency,” said Peter Kelly, an American-based attorney for SNCF. “The fact is many railway workers were killed by Nazis, many were bullied and the company was under control of an occupied government.”

  1. No.  We all get that the Holocaust was bad.  History is filled with crappy things done by crappy people.  Constantly playing the victim card three generations down the road only diminishes the significance of the event.

I wonder if she’d cut a deal - no French train in exchange for gifting her condo back to whatever Native American tribe should rightfully own her land.

  2. Good idea Recess, lets quit handing out welfare and food stamps to third and fourth generation minorities, make it all minorities regardless of generation or age. in your own words Recess how long can they play the victim?

We could cut them a deal also, drug test monthly and the kids school attendance reports, you pass you get the stamps.

  3. make it all minorities regardless of generation or age.

So only minorities get cut off? You might want to rephrase what you just wrote.

  4. Wow, I have no idea how we got from what I said to what crusher said.

We have the social welfare programs crusher described to deal with people who are struggling right now.  You don’t get a SNAP card because your great-great-great-grandmother was poor.  If the Jews of America are struggling to make ends meet, then I guess they can participate in programs we already have set up.

Agree 100%.  Pulling the alarm on SNCF makes this situation appear as nothing short of bullying, and emboldening these and other generational survivors to continue to do so.  When does one draw the line?

  7. Why are we considering spending tax dollars to buy a train that will put the French to work and enrich French businesses in any case?

Especially in the midst of the Obama recession

... and a company that has a dubious past

... in an age when we force American companies to disclose connections they may have had to slavery

  8. Thank you Son of Liberty, I did not think my statement was that hard to figure out, could be Recess just doesnt want to hear me.

In regards to the French trains this baffles me as well.If high speed rail is American recovery money, and building train lines certainly is construction, I thought all recovery money used in conjunction needs to be spent on labor or goods 100% American produced.

I know Doyle could care less in handing this cash over to the Spanish and bypassing a Milwaukee firm with a no bid contract award. These are very large sums of cash walking out of the country under the false pretense that its creating jobs here in the States. Why is anyone even considering anything less than American made?
