Fort Hood Shooting

I’m seeing some very irresponsible things being said about the shooting in Fort Hood right now.  We do not yet know enough to say anything about the guy’s motives or political proclivities.  There will come a time when we know and can discuss it, but that time is not now.  Now is the time to investigate, mourn, and pray.

  1. Certainly seems to contradict the argument that “if we all were armed, we’d be safer”. Fewer places with more guns than a military base.

  2. No.  Patently untrue.  I never had worse access to firearms than when I was in the Army.  You must store any personally owned weapons in your units armory, with permission from your CO, and ultimately the base commander.  So, your access to the firearms you own is basically, when the unit armorer feels like it and the CO hasn’t told him to lock ‘em down.  Which happens anytime the post itself gets locked down.

  3. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/art icle/2009/11/06/AR2009110600897.html?hpid=topnews

The soldiers in the building were performing routine administrative tasks and were not armed, he said. Only police officers and the response team had weapons they could use to stop the shooter.

He said an investigation will determine how the shooter brought guns onto the base, where, like at all U.S. military installations, firearms are kept secured unless they are needed for training or security work. Soldiers, like civilians, are allowed to maintain privately owned weapons in accordance with local gun laws, Rossi said. But they must register those weapons on post. He said investigators are still clarifying the origin of the guns used in the shooting.

“Random checks” are performed on vehicles entering the Fort Hood, to check for weapons or other contraband, Rossi said. But, he acknowledged, it is possible that the shooter “could have just brought it onto the base.”

  4. Nice try George, but you’ve just exposed yourself as both a pinhead and a moron for attempting to use this tragic event as a political stump for more gun control.

    Read up, buttercup.

  5. You gotta love guys like George, don’t ya?  Lets leave aside his complete ignorance about how civilian military bases operate for the moment.

Its not even 20 hours since the first shots were fired at Fort Hood, and this guy is already thinking up how to use the event as a punchline for some snarky gun control post in the comment area of a blog.

Yep ... those libs are a sensitive bunch, aren’t they?

  6. Yeah, but TD, you just took the ignorance of one person, and immediately used it to attack all liberals.

And I’ve been reading this blog for a while, and it seems no one hesitates to use Obama or Doyle as punchlines, or to make their own snarky comments on nearly anything that can slightly be considered liberal.

    So, please, take a pill.

  7. Give me a break Tom.  Politicians of any stripe are fair game to be used as punch lines to make a political point.  Mass killings shouldn’t be.  You aren’t really suggesting there isn’t a difference are you?

  8. “Yeah TD, but you just took the ignorance of one person, and immediately used it to attack all liberals.”

TD, I can’t speak for Tom, but your sentence I just quoted is the issue for me.  You did make an attack.  13 people died in this brutal attack and you and George are engaged in a pissing contest about liberals and guns.  Grow the f*ck up!  Both of you.

Like Owen said, a lot of irresponsible things are being said.  And yet, no one here has mentioned the heroics of the police officer who stopped this azzhole from killing/hurting more people and took a bullet herself in the line of duty.

We should be talking about her and the victims.
