Forcible Castration Law Comes Into Effect In Poland

Good idea?

A Polish law that can force some rapists and paedophiles to undergo chemical castration has come into effect.

The legislation, passed by Polish MPs last September, applies to men who rape children or immediate family members.

The procedure has been tried elsewhere, but usually on a voluntary basis.

  1. It’s a little Minority Reportish, but sexual perversion crimes seem in a class of their own. I’d expect many to be happy to be free of unnatural desire. And it really works for the victims.

  2. Can the child molester be cured?

Does it stop the convicted from committing the same crime again?

Does this save tax payer money insofar as prison/ rehabilitation costs?

If one volunteers for the castration, would one leave jail/prison sooner or immediately, would s/he get off the sex-crime national/state list, and have the felony erased?

I have not seen nor sought the research on this.  Anyone?

  3. Since we know without a doubt that the vast majority of sexual deviants cannot be rehabilitated or cured, what good is a temporary solution? Chemical castration isn’t like real castration, it stops working as soon as the perv goes off his meds.

Offer a reduced sentance and other inducements only if the perv volunteers for an irreversable surgical cure.

  5. The point to think is positivity of the act. The concrete steps that go missing many a time by the judicial systems.
Whether all problems will be solved or not, is issue which time alone can solve.

  6. Umnhhhh…interesting that this happened in Poland

The Catholic church teaches that deliberate mutilation of the body is gravely immoral.  So the solution is continued incarceration, not hacking off various parts.

  7. Thomas Jefferson proposed castrating sodomites but it didn’t go anywhere at a time when some states had sodomy laws that included death.

Although it has merit it is highly unlikely to go anywhere here.

  8. Should we also chop off trigger fingers? Or just the hands of people who steal?

  9. Dad29- It is chemical, not physical, and reversible.

There is some research showing that sex offenders report reduced libido and “desires” when treated.  How that translates to the judicial system, I don’t know.

  11. I used to do legal aid in prisons, and the majority of our clients were upper-middle class white guys because they were the ones who knew their rights and were used to flexing them.  Most of those guys were child sex offenders and a large number of them would beg with tears in their eyes for castration because they were convinced it would relieve them of their compulsion.  Unfortunately, that wasn’t an option, but maybe it should be.

Of course that’s only going to work on a portion of the pedophile crowd.  In my experience about half of them understand what they’re doing is wrong and are driven by corrupted sexual urges.  The other half are just straight up monsters who are motivated by forces other than sex, and I don’t think it would work for them.  They just want to hurt children, whether they’re completely honest with themselves about the hurt caused or not, so eliminating their sex drive likely wouldn’t change their behavior.
