Feed Where You Please

Advocacy Group: Mothers Have Right To Expose Milk-Engorged Breasts In Public

UPDATE: I should probably tell y’all my actual opinion on breast feeding in public before I get accused of all sorts of crap that I don’t actually think.

Breast feeding is perfectly natural and healthy for babies.  Mothers still need to live their lives and do things in public.  There are also other options available for mothers to give their children breast milk without exposing their breasts in public (pumping and using bottles), but sometimes circumstances intervene and those options aren’t available.  So, what do I think?

Should breast feeding be legal in public?  Absolutely.

Should private businesses be allowed to require women to conceal themselves or go to a private area in order to breast feed?  Yes.

In short, I come down to this: breast feeding is fine and necessary, but it can be done with some decorum in respect of surrounding people.  The same is true for most necessary biological functions.

  1. The Onion needs a counterpoint show:

When I’m out at a nice place the last thing I want to see is some moo cow floppin’ out an udder so her yuppie spawn can feed.

  2. If women want to whip out their boobs for any reason thats fine with me. But don’t get snippy if I tend to take a look.

  6. Couldn’t be clearer.  People who don’t like it should stay home and close their blinds.

  7. People should respect private property and not demand government force private businesses to allow them to engage in any behavior they want.  If you get asked to leave then leave.  Don’t go whining and crying to mommy and daddy government to fix it for you.  Be a freakin’ adult and have just a little bit of respect and concern that others around you, including the owner of the private business, may not want that behavior.

Government.  If you’re not ready to grow up it’s there for you!

  8. Kind of like how the government shouldn’t have told private businesses they can’t refuse to serve black Americans back in 64.  If they were asked to leave, they should have just left—been “frickin’” adults.

  9. Don’t forget about fraud too scott.  Telling business that they cannot lie about the safety or ingredients of their products is “terrorism”.  After several hundred thousand people die, the market will just naturally select a safer manufacturer.  And we’ll all be able to sleep better for the “liberty” that we enjoyed and that kept 100,000 or deaths from turning into 1 million.

  10. Fortunately, the Democrats finally addressed this most pressing issue:

    Wednesday, March 10, 2010

MADISON, Wis. (AP)—Gov. Jim Doyle has signed a law granting mothers in Wisconsin the right to breast-feed in public places.

Under the measure, anyone who interferes with a breast-feeding mother in any location she’s authorized to be would face up to $200 in fines. In those locations, no one can prevent a mother from breast-feeding or tell her to cover up her breast or move.

The bill is designed to protect women who breast-feed in malls, restaurants and other places from harassment.

    Doyle signed the law Wednesday.

  11. If that woman above in the picture flops it out and starts lactating while I am eating somewhere guess I will be getting a ticket.

Whats with the gov and his recent milk fetish, give it a rest jimbo, maybe his therapist told him his spending problems are related to lack of breast feeding as a child. Maybe a topless scandal is coming and he needs a good alibi.

  12. That’s right. All of those moo cows should be giving their kids formula instead. Why reduce cancer rates, ear infections, infant mortality, or a multitude of other ailments.

  13. Give the little critter vodka I dont care, I just want to enjoy my meal without a breast clocking me in the side of the head.

Wonder if anyone has or will be testing this law, such as you can dance topless if you have a breast pump strapped to your body. You could sell these to women as they enter the bar, talk about a money maker in Madison.

  14. And conservatives sit around wondering why they lose women’s votes…

  15. Flopping it out, feeding children vodka, getting clocked in the head by a nursing mother’s breast…anyone else wondering what planet crusher is on? Have a little trouble with boobs in your developmental period, old guy? (I just said “old guy” because I picture the wrestler every time I read that name)

  16. And conservatives sit around wondering why they lose women’s votes…

Yea, that’s exactly what we do.  Sit around wondering how to recapture the women’s vote.  But now it’s so clear: breast-feeding in public! That’s the priority issue that will cement a Republican majority in 2011.

  17. Of course it isn’t.  But comparing it to topless dancing and making jokes about giving babies vodka isn’t exactly the road to electoral victory, either.  You guys sound like total jerks.

  18. I have been to many eateries, malls, parks, and I have seen woman and I myself have breastfeed my children in all those venues.  Every woman has been discreet, used a blanket or an appropriate shirt.  The “flop it out as I eat”....really you guys have that happen all the time.  Then don’t eat at McDonald’s with a playland!

  19. The point that the satirical Onion clip makes is that it’s really the women who “flop it out” who get the negative reactions in the first place.  Had women been more discreet, there would not have been a need for the law.

But don’t confuse any of that with my position.  I think most people are stark raving hypocrites when it comes to the issue of women’s breasts.  Can someone explain, logically, why it’s okay for a woman to expose her breasts in public if she’s holding a baby, but not at the beach if she’s laying down to get a tan?  I’m fine with either scenario.  It’s the militant pro-breastfeed crowd are the first to lodge complaints that a bare chested young co-ed no holding a baby is somehow wrecking the family environment of a park or beach.
