Evan Bayh Declines to Run

Huh.

Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Indiana, announced Monday afternoon that he will not seek a third term in the Senate - a major blow to Democrats worried about losses in the looming midterm elections.

“Congress is not operating as it should,” Bayh said at a news conference in Indianapolis. There is too much partisanship and “the people’s business is not getting done.”

[...]

But he “hates the Senate (and) hates the left bloggers,” said a friend of the senator who has also served as a longtime adviser. “They are getting their wish (of) pure Democrats in the minority.”

I thought the “purity test” was only an issue for Republicans.

  1. Some Democrats are much more conservative than Republicans and are very unhappy with the far left mutiny of their party.

Nearly 20% of Americans now identify themselfs with the Tea Party in less then a year.

  3. I thought they had him polling 20 points AHEAD of Coats?

Anyhow, what’s slightly amusing is that he seemed to try and time it so the Dems would be able to pick their candidate.  It turns out that they might not exactly be able to.  See, there’s a woman in indiana trying to get on the ballot, she just needed 500 more signatures today.

I have a sneaking suspicion that she’s going to get them, but I also hear that somehow Baron Hill has managed to get the signatures, even though he’s out of the country.
