Energy Star Tax Holiday bill

Doyle and Lawton seem to be coming around to believing in the economic benefit of tax cuts.

Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton on Tuesday announced a new Energy Star Tax Holiday bill, which would designate one week each year for people to buy Energy Star-certified appliances without paying sales tax.

The tax holiday would cover the seven-day period beginning the Saturday before April 21. It would prevent sales tax from being assessed on eligible Energy Star-certified products during the period.

Appliances must cost up to $1,500 and must be for residential use. Examples of qualifying appliances include, but isn’t limited to refrigerators, dishwashers, programmable thermostats, washers, dryers and light bulbs.

Perhaps next they will recognize and an overall lower tax burden benefits people too.  Am I being too optimistic?

  1. Actually, Doyle trashed his Lt.‘s idea.

“Tax holidays sound good, but the governor does not think we should be picking winners and losers from consumers,” said (Doyle spokesman) Matt Canter.

  2. Appliance dealers might as well close their doors for a few weeks prior to the tax holiday, because customers will not be coming in. Then they can raise their prices for the week because everybody will be flocking in to save the sales tax. Bad deal for both business and consumers. A better idea would be a refundable tax credit similar to the Homestead credit so you could buy any time of the year and still get the refund even if you are not required to file a tax return.
