Elliot tries to correct come misstatements by the editors of the MJS.
An editorial in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel contains the line:
The Legislature was elected to create a spending plan for the state.
Untrue.
Legislatures are elected to govern.
Sometimes that involves spending money.
The evil assumption that spending money is government’s main purpose is one of the reasons why big government and its many accomplices must be resisted at every turn.
Providing a plan to pay for the services required by the common enterprise is the business of those elected to govern.
Sticking one’s fingers in one’s ears and repeating, “No!” is the activity of my two-year-old granddaughter.
When your granddaughter is six, she will demand that you buy her everything she sees. That would be like the Senate Democrats and Governor Doyle.
We need adults - that would be the Republican Assembly - to say NO.
Actually, Legislatures are elected to legislate, not govern. The executive branch governs.
Legislators are elected to office in the hopes of representing the best interests of the electorate. And for many, that means NOT adopting a budget that will negatively impact their constituency. Thus, doing their job, at times, means doing nothing.
