Dumping Fees to Be Highest In the Nation

Aren’t we lucky...

Lawmakers’ decision to increase landfill charges will heap additional costs on local units of government, and a trade group says it would raise the tax to the highest in the nation.

The City of Milwaukee estimated that a recent vote by the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee to sharply increase the tax on waste would cost the city an additional $2.3 million a year.

Waukesha would pay an estimated $116,000 more annually, and Brookfield would spend an additional $94,500, according to estimates supplied by the National Solid Wastes Management Association.

Smaller communities would also pay higher garbage bills if the measure passes both houses and is signed by the governor.

  1. Garbage in, garbage out.  Just more expensive in
Wisconsin.  Here in Vegas, our current landfill is supposed to last 200 years and then they build a new one across the street.
This will raise more taxes in Wisconsin, but hey, you folks in Wisconsin must be swimming in money for all these taxes they are raising.
Of course, taxes and fees is a major reason why I and thousands of others have moved out of Wisconsin in the past few years.

  4. This isn’t going to cost “the city” anything.  Cities pass on their costs to city residents.

It IS going to cost city TAXPAYERS, maybe twice as much as it now does.

In Fitchburg, solid waste removal is paid ona “fee for service” basis, so it isn’t even deductible on my federal income tax.  That bites.
