Gov. Jim Doyle wants to increase fees for handgun purchase background checks.
Doyle’s executive budget calls for raising the check fee from $8 to $30.
The state Department of Justice asked Doyle to raise the fee from $8 to $13 to reflect the increased costs of performing the checks, but Doyle, a Democrat, went further.
Herein we come to the discussion about the difference between a tax and a fee. When a fee is used for things other than to cover the specific services it was levied for, it becomes a tax. In this case, an increase in the fee to $13 to cover the actual cost of doing the background check is legitimate (assuming that is the actual cost). By increasing it further, Doyle is converting the fee into a tax.
Yet another tax increase from our governor.

Except when calculating total taxes levied in Wisconsin. Then a fee is never a tax because if fees are counted we find out that total revenue generated by Wisconsin in the form of taxes and fees is right about the national average and that takes away from our argument that Wisconsin is a high taxed state.
Did I get that right?

While that might be somewhat true, they certainly don’t have any problems making it more expensive to obtain one.

My over/under line on that is January 2010.

I remember when he was AG and wanted to ban the possession of all handguns with barrels shorter than 4”. When Dane County wanted to ban handguns he supported that effort. He campaigned hard to keep the “right to keep and bear” out of the state Constitution. He is and always has been a radical leftist who despises liberty and prefers his peasants and subjects unarmed-they are soooooo much easier to manage that way.

.
Care to prove that?
It’s pretty obvious that Doyle is on a quest to remove as much money as possible from your wallet and give it to the trial lawyers (note increasing the auto insurance limits, and the reinstatement of the 1% liability) and WEAC (note removal of the QEO)
He isn’t bashful about where it comes from - as long as he can increase the amount that he takes.
I smell a new governor next term…

Whoever runs against him will need to have a 60/40 margin on people who cast only one ballot, however.

Anyone?
Posted by Mike Gallo on March 03, 2009 at 1715 hrsduh… I just skimmed it the first time and only saw the $13 number quoted.
Posted by Mike Gallo on March 03, 2009 at 2037 hrsLet us thank JB Van Hollen for asking for the increase in the fist place thereby giving Doyle the idea to raise it.
Knives in the back from every angle.
