Doyle Supports Repeal of Minimum Markup Law

This is from a press release from Chad Fradette, who is running against Senator Hansen.

In a question and answer session with the Appleton Post Crescent published in today’s newspaper, Governor Jim Doyle voiced his support for repealing Wisconsin’s Minimum Markup Law, a position outlined by former Green Bay Common Council President and State Senate Candidate Chad Fradette (R-Green Bay) more than two weeks ago.

  1. Whoda thunk Jim Doyle would be more conservative than Glenn Grothman on any issue?

  3. I’ll believe it when it happens. Doyle has been a consistant liar.

  4. Then let’s make it happen!

  5. Sorry to hear about Gov. Doyle’s accident.  Clearly he’s suffered some sort of head trauma if he’s endorsing some sort of tax cut.

Like bajaskier, I’ll believe this when I see it.

  6. he’s endorsing some sort of tax cut.

Hard to say if cuts in retail price will correlate to a tax cut.  Less sales tax will be collected in those instances where the retail price has been set less than the current mandated mark-up, but then again, maybe consumers will apply those savings to other purchases.

  7. Don’t worry Amy, its not a tax cut, just allowing some free commerce. I’m sure he’s got something planned in wings to stifle commerce again.

  8. Doyle can say whatever he wants, especially since he knows a repeal of the MML won’t happen anytime soon in the Legislature.  So he can just sit back and make such comments without really having to back it up.

Executives do this a lot, and not just Doyle.  They say things like, “I’d sign that bill if the Legislature sent it to my desk.”

But if they know it will never reach their desk during their Administration, what do they care?  This is a very old tactic and has nothing to do with Doyle looking out for taxpayers or being more conservative than the conservatives.

It’s classic political pandering, and Doyle does it well.

  9. Doyle supported the law’s repeal when he was AG as well.

  10. Doyle has been very consistent on this issue, so I do not know why everyone is in a tizzy.

  11. The irrational animus of some of the posters here comes through as expected.  The Governor opposed the minimum markup law when he was Attorney General and testified against it at hearings held on bills to repeal it.  Some of you need to grow up!

  14. No DA is going to prosecute Fradette (sorry, Owen, for the tangent).  He did his due diligence; the problem is with the GAB not listening to its own attorneys.

At least he wasn’t handing out packs of cigarettes on election day…
