Like we didn’t see this coming...
Last year, Gov. Jim Doyle became the first Democrat to be re-elected Wisconsin governor in 32 years. On Friday night he hinted that he might try to duplicate the feat in 2010.
“At the end of these four years of working together, we may need four more,” said Doyle, the keynote speaker at the Democratic Party State Convention in Milwaukee.
What, so our taxes can become 50-60 percent of our income and we have that #1 position for highest taxed states firmly locked in?!?
I didn’t vote for him the last two times and I certainly would not vote for him this time either.
Hopefully the WI GOP has its act together and runs a better campaign than they did for Green.
“At the end of these four years of working together, we may need four more.”
TRANSLATED: If the people of Wisconsin were stupid enough to vote for a dumbassed, socialistic, bald headed, liar such as my self to a SECOND term surely they will vote me in for a third.
Or how about this one…
“We cannot, we must not, stop until Wisconsin taxes are the highest in the land.
I had been thinking that if Tom Barrett actually gets Vince Robot as Milwaukee’s next police chief my wee wifey would look more favorably on my fantasy of moving to Jefferson County. Maybe we should just start planning to join our son in Kansas City instead.
Keyword blood, of which you can get only so much out of a turnip.
I’ve already decided my days in this state are numbered. If the knobs in this state re-elect that clown a third time, it’ll just hasten my leaving for a less big government, less costly state.
In 2008, watch for Democrats to retain control of the Senate and take control of the Assembly. That sets Doyle up for a clear shot in 2010.
Why is this happening? Because Republicans insist on running extremist candidates. “Washington County crazy” does NOT play statewide!
Wally, it’s not so much that Republicans are running extremist candidates outstate. It’s more that moderate candidates and seats are being lost because those incumbents end up getting tarred with a reputation of a party that has no interest in the concerns of anyone other than Charlie Sykes’ lap dogs.
Loeffelholz, Krawczyk, Kreibich, and Towns all lost in large part to increased turnout on UW campuses because of the gay marriage amendment. Amendment supporters apparently forgot to look at the map before deciding that the fall ballot was the right place for that. Their strategy completely backfired.
Pettis lost because the Democrats found a fantastic candidate. The Ward seat was lost because of changing demographics and a big push by the unions. The Underheim seat was lost because of the gay marriage ballot, and also because the GOP picked a terrible candidate. And Freese got skewered by taking a procedural vote against his own ethics bill.
All of them lost because they were consistently forced to defend votes on policies that most of them were never that gung-ho about to begin with. A party that pushes concealed carry, TABOR, gay marriage, and the PLW agenda isn’t exactly catering to a broad sector of the electorate.
Republicans were successful in building a 60-seat majority because they focused on big tent issues and responded to where the voters were in each election. However, the aggressive, in-your-face mentality of so many conservatives in Southeast Wisconsin has really harmed how the party is perceived outstate. Instead of responding to the concerns of voters, the SE WI delegation tries to *tell* outstate leggies what their voters’ concerns are, and they and their staffers then run to squawk radio every time someone outstate dares to dissent.
But it’s not all their fault. If they don’t goose-step just right, radio morons like Belling start talking about how the wingnuttery of the suburbs should run an even more strident candidate against them in a primary. In some instances, these leggies are just doing what they have to do in order to survive.
However, you’re pretty much right in your predictions, Wally. Soon, Southeast Wisconsin will get its way: it will have 43-46 seats in the Assembly and 11-13 seats in the Senate. When Joe Wineke says they’re going to pick up nine seats in the Assembly, there’s a lot of seriousness behind his jovial facade.
The Democrats are badly outraising Republicans. They’re already lining up candidates. They have a focused and clear message that’s already been tested for its effectiveness.
The ‘06 bloodbath can be chalked up to the Republicans’ political incompetence. But the ‘08 bloodbath will probably be chalked up to the Democrats’ newfound political competence.
P.S. If a Democrat wins the White House in ‘08, I wouldn’t be surprised if Doyle is approached about a position in the administration. The only dilemma that creates is that Barb Lawton, like Scott McCallum, isn’t anywhere close to the party’s best option for a general election.
Much better stated than my short commentary.
It is humorous to listen to all of the crazy Republicans trash Tommy G. Thompson, who was the Republican who broke the Democratic control of the Capitol which lasted from roughly 1970 until his election in 1986. (Even then, of course, it took a couple more elections for Republicans to win control of both houses.)
How did Tommy win? By taking dead aim at the center of the highway and brushing away anyone who tried to pull him into the ditch on the right shoulder.
Barbara Lyons and Mary Babushka (with the even more nutty Pro-Life Wisconsin) never got the time of day from Tommy. He knew how to keep them voting Republican without throwing so much as a bone to them. Where else were they going to go?
It’s almost laughable watching the nut jobs (Chuckles Sykes and Mark Belling, who looks like he would have fit right in during the 1930’s in Berlin!) drag the once-noble party down.
The scary thing about Wineke’s bravado is he actually left off his 08 hit list a couple of Republicans who won by the skin of their teeth ( Williams of Medford, and Nerison of Prairie Du Chien). Doyle and the dems are licking their chops at having both houses to redistrict the state into a permanent dem majority, and then it will be all over for a generation. Tommy needs to take on Doyle in 2010. That old warhorse is our only hope to turn things around.
“That old warhorse is our only hope to turn things around.”
You forgot one thing, Seth—Tommy G. Thompson is adicted to spending gummint money! Can you imagine if TGT had put even as little as 10% away in a “rainy day fund”? We would have had no deficits!
Another point—Folks like “Chickenhawk Charlie” Sykes never had the cojones to criticize Tommy when he was Governor, but boy did they come out of the woodwork when he was gone!
A 3rd Doyle term? I think I’m going to be sick!!
Yea Wally, liberalism (read; socialism) is sweeping the globe.
What with a new liberal in charge in France, Oh wait a minute the conservative won, anyway, a new liberal in charge in Germany, oh wait a minute the conservative won. At least a lib in GB? Oh a conservative won?
keep giving your money to moveon.org Wally. It only strengthens conservatives. Please stay in your own little made up world.
What continent in this world has turned to liberalism and its communist overtones? South America.
Did I neglect to mention that Japan elected a conservative? Canada the same?
And your brand of liberalism, when honestly espoused has fared how well? How many states did McGovern win? Jimmuh?
Mondale?
Yea Wally keep on keeping on with your groovy moveon.org candidates.
Yours is an ideology that has surpassed it’s usefullness. That is a whole ‘nother issue for a whole ‘nother time.
Your introverted mind telling you that America is ready for socialism is my best weapon. Everytime you open your mouth it’s ten people less that I have to explain facts to.
Stay the course Wally.
Now, I really won’t be able to afford any good healthcare. Maybe, I’ll move to Mexico.
Someone should be getting prepared NOW to run against Doyle.
I am not quite ready to give up on the intelligence of “outstate” Wisconsin. We won’t have the amendment on the ballot this time, so the UW vote won’t even come close to what it was last time. How the budget comes out will also be a big factor.
There are those (my parents included) that read the WSJ and the Urinal and buy it hook line and sinker, but there is no way that the tax and fee increases the Dim’s want won’t be felt in EVERY wallet. At some point, the middle-of-the-roaders will look up and say “SHIT, my out-go to the state has outpaced my in-come from my job - what benefit, exactly do I get from all this?”. It will also be interesting to see how the new MPG requirements affect especially Kenosha and Janesville, because the Dim’s gave the big middle finger to the UAW.
Two brief notes:
To Ched Head, I get what you’re saying to Wally, but Democrats are winning state races in Wisconsin specifically because they are *not* picking a bunch of Mark Pocan clones. They’re actually doing a very good job of recruiting candidates who are by and large seen as being thoughtful and reasonable. You’re welcome to make all the liberal jokes you want, but Dems are succeeding precisely because they are recruiting candidates who do *not* easily fit into the stereotype you hold.
To “recovered liberal,” you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but let me say that if there’s one thing that bothers a lot of outstate leggies and citizens as a whole, it’s the condescending, “we know better than you” attitude that oozes from the pores of so many in SE Wisconsin. Whether it’s stuff like “I am not quite ready to give up on the intelligence of ‘outstate’ Wisconsin” or the timeless classic, “these voters who elect Doyle and the Democrats are so stupid, they get what they deserve,” a lot of people don’t appreciate conservatives constantly looking down their nose at everyone who doesn’t support everything Sykes or Belling say. Remember, a lot of the outstate people who were “dumb” enough to vote for Doyle were also “smart” enough to vote for Van Hollen.
If a voter agrees with you 80% of the time, it would make sense that he would probably vote for you. But if you constantly insult his intelligence the other 20% of the time, he’s going to stop voting for you because he feels like you don’t respect him. This is precisely the problem that conservatives are facing in selling the message. Conservatives are creating the impression that they don’t want anyone around who is in less than 100% agreement - that they are proud that have no tolerance for the occasional utterance of a contrary viewpoint within the party.
Jjust like with hardcore liberals, conservatives are only going to find about 20-25% of voters who are in agreement with them 100% of the time. That means 50-60% of voters aren’t with either side all of the time, and all conservatives show for these people these days is contempt. More than anything, it is the tenor of the conservative delivery that makes life so good for the Democrats these days. And the blind spot that conservatives have for that fact is enormous.
Conservatives don’t necessarily have a bad message, but these days, they lack the sales skills to recruit the voters they need to make things happen. And the Democrats will keep winning until the conservatives figure that out.
Any chance Mark Green would run again? I sure hope so.
Ched Head is crazy if he thinks UW campuses won’t be ginned up in 08. The Dems, and their UW admininstrative lackeys have figured out how to mobilize thousands of college students who turn out and vote dem by a two to one margin. A wide open presidential race that may include a charismatic african american, and a woman will turn them out in droves. The Republican hierarchy will once again simply ignore the campuses, not put paid staff on the ground there, and in the process ensure no Republican will represent a college campus. The Republican guru’s will make a huge mistake thinking 06 was an aberration because of the marriage issue. The Dems will find an issue, any issue, to turn out young voters.
Well if the Dems want to find an issue that will trun out students just say they’ll increase funding for grants and lower college costs. That would do it. Republican startegists don’t plan on winning another election till 2016 so Doyle love him or hate him will probably get elected especially with Wisconsin looking like an increasingly “Blue” state.
it’ll just hasten my leaving for a less big government, less costly state.
Careful what state you pick - this came up on my AOL home page. Things are getting insane all over the place. The bolded text is my doing - note that this initiative is not about traffic safety - it’s about fund raising.
Virginians Face $3,000 Traffic Ticket

Filed Under: Law, Nation(July 1) - Virginia is for lovers, or so the state slogan has declared since 1969. Starting today, Virginia also will be the home of the $3,000 traffic ticket. In an effort to raise money for road projects, the state will start hitting residents who commit serious traffic offenses with huge civil penalties.
Beginning Sunday, Virginia is adding new civil charges to traffic fines. They range from $750 to $3,000 and will be added to existing fines and court costs. The civil penalty for going 20 mph over the speed limit will be $1,050, plus $61 in court costs and a fine that is typically about $200.
Virginia’s new traffic penalties are expected to raise $65 million a year and are part of an effort to improve the state’s roads without raising taxes.
A first-time drunken driver will face a $2,250 civil penalty, plus fines and court costs that typically run about $500 or more. Driving without a license? That’s a mandatory $900 civil penalty, in addition to the ordinary $100 for a fine and court costs.
The civil penalties apply only to Virginia residents, not out-of-state drivers. Virginians must pay in three installments over 26 months or lose their licenses. The state Legislature didn’t think it could enforce the extra penalties in other states.
Motorist club AAA Mid-Atlantic supports the new penalties.“These penalties are harsh, but normal fines haven’t gotten people to drive sanely. Maybe this will,” says Lon Anderson, spokesman for AAA Mid-Atlantic.
He says the new law will help reduce the nearly 1,000 traffic deaths the state records annually.
“We wish motorists didn’t have to pay more, but the fact is Virginia’s transportation trust fund is broke,” Anderson says.
From displaced ched head: “Yea Wally, liberalism (read; socialism) is sweeping the globe.”
Hey, I’m a Barry Goldwater Republican! You know, the kind that doesn’t trust the gummint to tell me what to do in ANY area of life!
The problem with you Bible-thumpers is that you can’t get enough gummint regulation on the social issues. You want the gummint out of the board room but full-time in the bedroom.
Remember when Barry Goldwater said (at a press conference) that he “wanted to kick Jerry Falwell in the ass”?
He’s got my vote.
BTW, who’s the two fat-assed butt gunners in the photo?
Oh goody! At Diamond Jim’s current taxation rate, in 5.26 years my taxes will be more than 50% the value of my property! Can you say “Nevada”?
wally and Hillary Clinton- who woul;d have thought.
bajaskier- still lots of room in Nevada for you, other than it is hot- 117 on Thursday.
Dan:
True. I would be a snowbird. Beautiful Wisconsin summers, beautiful Nevada (or Arizona, or Missouri, or Florida or….) tax rate.
