Distrusting Obama

My column for the West Bend Daily News is online.  It’s called, “Distrusting Obama.”

I look at the controversy surrounding the president’s address to the school kids today.  What Obama is saying is rather innocuous and the idea that he was going to do it shouldn’t have been controversial.  But his track record and clumsy execution reveal a deep distrust of this particular president.

  2. I just the “prepared remarks” for what Obama is going to say today. Actually I thought they were pretty good. He’s actually asking the students to take responsibility for their own education, and not to try to find ways to blame someone else.

I also read your article, I agree with what you said. Obama has always been a bureaucrat, so he thinks everything should be solved by government.

Fortunately - there’s still a few of us who prefer to handle things on our own.

  4. Good column, but you know there will be those on the left, whether pundits, race pimps or pols who will/have declared racism as the reason for unease over this speech. They can’t help themselves. I agree that his mistake was that lesson plan. The speech itself, if this was the original, was spot on. He didn’t need the lesson plan to muck up the works.

  5. The first person that I’ve seen try to inject race into the discussion is here in the comments.  The fact that the same commenter felt the need to add the parentetical, “if this was the original” says a lot about the basis for the objections.

  6. Grumps, I’ve seen it elsewhere. Hell, Rangle has used it against those who disagree with Obama on health care. As to the other comment, I also heard and read that at other sites, though, I didn’t have a problem with Obama giving the address. It’s a good thing to try and inspire kids. Happy? I doubt it due to your moniker.

  7. This precedent means the WBSD is under no obligation to provide WBSD students live video speech of any current or future president from now on.  No live speech by any president should ever be allowed again in WBSD.  It’s too political an event, and to show such a speech from this point forward would be hypocritical.

  8. Obama needs to look at the bright side. At least Congress won’t hold hearings on him the way they did on Bush the Elder over this matter. Silver linings and all that.

  9. Of course he isn’t popular—among racist crackers.

  11. I understand that it was a fine speech; for the president of the School Board to have given.  But why does the President of the United States stoop to giving such a speech? Is everything else in the nation going so swimmingly well that he has nothing better to do?

In a marvelous “chalk talk” called “Sex and the Naval Aviator”, http://www.pprune.org/archive/index.php/t-357943.html  the flight surgeon Frank Dulley discussed the syndrome called the “failing aviator”.  The “failing aviator” focuses all his attention and effort on the few things that he could do well, while ignoring all of the other things that he NEEDED to do - but could not do acceptably well.  For Obama to give a speech such as this to schoolchildren is the only sign we need that he is failing - and KNOWS it.

  12. Well said, grumps.  Well said.  Your observations are “spot on”.

Billiam, it appears YOU can’t “help yourself”.  Congratulations on demonstrating that people of ALL backgrounds are capable of “playing the race card” and injecting race unnecessarily.  Your use of the term “race pimps” speaks volumes.

Keith, please don’t feed the squirrels.

  13. Innocuous? I’m not so certain of that. He constantly harped on the idea that failing in their education would mean that kids failed their country.

“What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. What you’re learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future.“

“If you quit on school – you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country. “

“And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you – don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.”

That’s pretty heavy handed and very nearly an exhortation to rise to the defense of the fatherland. What would have been wrong with emphasizing the effects on a more personal or local level? Rather than turning the decisions into something momentous?

Imagine the outrage of the left if W had been this heavy handed in demanding service to the country from schoolkids. Imagine their indignation at the suggestion of subsuming their desires to the greater good of the country under W.

  14. Yes, nerdbert, imagine if some President had stood up and said, “Ask not what your counrty can do for you.  Ask what you can do for your country.”

Imagine if a President had asked us all to be one of a thousand points of light in America.

Imagine if a President exhorted any or all of us to do what we can to make America great.

    Just effin’ imagine.

  15. The only racism that I have seen around here the last few years is the racism exhibited by Rev. Wright, Obama and company.  Those of us that are Libertarian Conservatives who will be meeting at the Future Wisconsin Conservative Conference on Oct. 10th in Wauwatosa believe that all men are equal, some of them aren’t that smart, mostly liberals, but we don’t care about sex, creed, color or any of those things. We look at a person and what he can contribute.

  16. Well, grumps, you didn’t do the Cash for Clunkers so you’ve failed your country.

Well, grumps, participating in the Cash for Clunkers will help this country economically.

Can you see the difference you effin’ moron? In one case you voluntary help in a noble cause, in the other you’re like your logic: an effin’ failure!

(Nice language by the way! Classy debating technique deserves classy replies!)

  18. The point is people do not exist to serve the country.  The country exists to serve people.
