Death Penalty Advisory Referendum Goes To Voters

Good.

Voters in the November election will be asked whether the state should reinstate the death penalty, following a vote today by the state Senate.

The Senate voted 18-15 to agree with changes made by the Assembly this month and send the issue to voters in November, rather than the September primary as called for in an earlier version of the measure.

[...]

The question, which won’t be binding, will read: Should the death penalty be enacted in the State of Wisconsin for cases involving a person who is convicted of first-degree intentional homicide, if the conviction is supported by DNA evidence?

I was actually in the Senate gallery for a short time today and saw Senator Lena Taylor rambling on while a few Senators checked their watches.

Now it is up to the people.

  1. owen,

i find it interesting that your local senator could not think this through and vote yes.  he should relish the idea of an election that has a higher turn out.  in his usual fashion he tried to put together a rational thought and failed.

on a seperate note if cathy stepp doesn’t think that now is the time for debate on the issue then when is the time?
