Dear Jeff Wagner

It’s “sunk” costs you’ve been talking about regarding Jeff Suppan. Sunk, not fixed.

Fixed costs are costs that don’t change in the short run, like the cost of uniforms for the season.

Sunk costs are costs that cannot be recouped no matter what happens. For example, when you go to Old Country Buffet and pay your $9.99 for dinner (or whatever it is nowadays), it doesn’t matter whether you stuff yourself or just eat a salad, the $9.99 is spent no matter what. Whether Suppan plays or sits on the bench, the money they spent on him is spent. It is a sunk cost.

Needed to get that off my chest. grin

  1. Very true. And Suppan’s name has ben mentioned in the same sentence as the term “sunk cost” a lot lately.  Just curious who Jeff Wagner is and what this post is in response to? Link to the article perhaps?

  2. Wagner’s on the radio, so there’s no link. I don’t follow baseball, so take this for what it’s worth. Suppan pitches for the Brewers, I think. It appears that while he used to be good, he is not very good anymore. Still, they are required to pay him whether he actually pitches or not.

However, at least three different days on the radio, Wagner has talked about this topic and used the term “fixed cost” instead of “sunk cost.” It makes me want to break a window.

Because most sports (in particular baseball) is boring and irrelevant in a world beset with mentally ill rulers like Pelosi, Reid and Obummer. We have greater things to discuss than overpaid prima donnas scratching and spitting on the TV. And the overpaid athletes don’t behave much better!

[ya, I know it doesn’t work real well, but it’s early]

  4. The real answer is because the blog is primarily read by folks with a Wisconsin connection but its primary authors/administrators are not Packer fans.

Which was a good thing during the Favre Watches.

Wendy, life is too short to spend your time correcting Jeff Wagner.

  6. As a recovering lawyer/political talk show host, Wagner is a horrible economics/sports guy.

At least the entirety of the 2011 club option for $12.75 million isn’t sunk into the Rusted Soup Can - the club bought that out for a “mere” $2 million.

  7. Wendy,
Thanks.  Seems like the Wagner guy is more of a right wing squawker than a sports analyst.  Suppan was never very good.  He was serviceable for a while and had his best years and a great playoff performance right before we signed him.

    Duke,
How well the hometeam does has a much bigger impact on the lives of most Americans than does the “difference” between which stupid Republican/Democrat gets elected to office.
