Cracking Down on Mascots

Why don’t we focus on improving education and leave the decisions about mascots to the local residents, mmmmkay?

A proposal designed to crack down on race-based school mascots and logos in Wisconsin is up for a vote before the state Assembly on Tuesday.

The bill calls for the state Department of Public Instruction to investigate complaints about race-based names, nicknames, logos or mascots. School boards would have a chance to argue the logos or mascots don’t discriminate, harass or stereotype. The state superintendent could fine schools if they don’t make changes.

  1. Does that mean schools with nicknames such as Orangemen, Dutchmen, and Irish will have to change?

  3. cuz “local residents” can be insensitive dicks

So, you want to control those you disagree with.

Sure would like to have you provide specifics on your dumbassed statement without resorting to past decades, or centuries, for you generalizations.

  4. Dumbassed statement? Seems you just prefer to badger those you don’t agree with.

The point, if I must spell it out, is that small groups of like-minded people might end up selecting names/mascots that—while reflective of their world-view—are insensitive/insulting to more diverse populations.

  5. BS George.

It is simply more encroachment of the ever-growing nanny-state trying to regulate all of us into political correctness.

Looking at the deficits that WI has…  I’m thinking they have more pressing issues.

  6. yes, you’ll look at any attempt for reasonable fairness and equality in treatment and representation of others as “encroachment” of a “nanny-state”.

i mean, what’s really wrong with white only water fountains, anyway?  if that’s what the locals want, why not let them have it?

  7. If they really want to solve the problem, and save a ton of money in the process, they will just abolish sports altogether.

  8. The reasons for a PT legislatre just keep piling up.

Shouldn’t they be working on fixing our budget shortfall rather than worrying about mascots for crying out loud!

  9. So a small group of like-minded people end up selecting names/mascots that—while reflective of their world-view—are insensitive/insulting to more diverse populations but represent their small group.  And to you, this is wrong?

    Like I said;

So, you want to control those you disagree with.

Sorry, I believe small groups of people should be free to reflect their own world view.  If that offends “more diverse” people, then they should really try to understand what the hell diverse really means.

  10. So, TerryN, you truly believe that a local community should be allowed to call a sports team “The Nigger Haters” or, for that matter, pass ordinances making it illegal for a Jew to live there, or for a Protestant to marry a Catholic?

You see no need for any broader rights to exist outside the unique world view of a limited set of people?

Now I’m starting to understand the zeitgeist here (if its ok for me to use German)

  11. George - Yes, I believe in freedom.  Organize a local community in today’s world and allow them to call their teams by your non real world examples.  Ain’t going to happen in the today’s world.

But keep referencing the past to justify political correctness.  You may even believe you’re being “progressive”.

  12. True story; When I went to Oconomowoc H.S., where the mascott is the racoon and we were called Cooney.  When I ran track and cross country, we were given free gym bags from a local business.  On the bag, it said: “Home of the Coons”.  Well, went to a meet in Washington Park in Milwaukee and our bags didn’t go over too well.
So, do you outlaw animal names like racoons because of the abrevation could be racist?

  13. Yes, George.  You insult Terry when you suggest he should pay attention to the lessons of history.  He’s a bully who believes that his wants and wishes must be granted and to hell with the hindmost.

This is the Tea Party legacy; a government by the most selfish and ignorant.  The world has seen these movements before and they’ll see them again.  It’s just hard to keep them and theirs away from the switches of power.

  14. This could also be applied to the ridiculous brouhaha over the Marquette Warriors.

Seriously, how is “Warriors” offensive?  And how many different groups in history could, or have been called “Warriors”?

No, this is purely the expansion of the perpetually offended victim class.

Noplace in the Constitution does it say we have the right to not be offended.  I’m offended by the Jesus in Feces “art”.  I’m offended that schools are putting in foot baths and allowing prayer rooms for Muslims but howl in protest when a Boy Scout group wants to use a room for a meeting.  There are more.  But as the Progressives have told us ad nauseum - art is freedom of speech so we will just have to put up with being offended.  Separation of Church and State and all..  Well that’s just a double standard with Islam - nevermind.

LIfe ain’t fair, get a helmet.

But seeing that George and the other apologists seem to think this should be a priority of the Legislature shows more about their own skewed priorities as well.

  15. Awww, poor little grumps.

The Tea party wants people to be free.  You jackasses don’t.  That’s enough of a contrast for me to be able to decide which side is good, and which is bad.  Guess what, you’re bad.

  16. I’m of Czech and German descent.  I would welcome a team called somethingt like the “Fightin’ Bohunks” or “Teutonic Tide”.  Sadly, that will never happen.  Remember a while back when some sports team decided to call itself “The Fightin’ Whites”?  Instead of sending an insult, folks from all over the country were trying to buy jerseys from the team.  Seems like out of all the sports team names there are miserably few that honor Caucasians.  People were thrilled that finally one was doing that, however sarcasticly.

  17. Oh, stop all the bickering.  There can only be so many (Kingsford, Mi) Flivvers (the Ford Model T), (Houghton, Mi)  Gremlins, or (Watersmeet, MI)  Nimrods (an expert hunter). Let those in the immediate area decide what is offensive, and if a complaint doesn’t come from the community, or from the school’s regular opponents, then yes, I am afraid it would be one set of peoples rights against that of another, and in this case, I would have to stand with the local residents rather than those that are feeling slighted of denigrated.

  19. Elovrich finally hits on the evasive solution.  This is clearly a move on the part of government to, once again, remove local control.  Simple as that.  Let the community decide.  If a mascot name is really causing an issue, the locals will deal with it.

Have people forgotten that mascot names are given as an honor?

  24. Wow, liberal are really having to dig through the garbage these days to find things to be outraged at. Since they are not allowed by ideology to voice complaint at the Democrat Party, they must now struggle to find the most weaselly things to substitute for the red meat they lack.

@George: The sampling of names that you have chosen forces me to call you an idiot. No one is naming sports teams in such a fashion. The names are chosen as a sign of strength, not disrespect. They pick “Warriors” and “Redskins” because they define a strength and will to fight that people seek to emulate. The names are meant as an honor, and the feigned outrage of the perpetually outrage chattering classes is just ideological hyperbole.

Perhaps the liberal folks just don’t understand the spirit to fight and win that is exhibited by sports. Liberals are the ones who decided to remove scoring to avoid hurt feeling, after all. Maybe it’s just the fear of competition and failure that drives liberals to attack these team names. Liberals do seem to love the level playing field of the least common denominator. Maybe that’s it. Perhaps the ones who are outraged are simply channeling the hurt feelings of having been picked last for kick ball teams, and being the first one out in dodge ball.

  40. Let’s just be done with this whole thing.

Government Approved Team A vs.  Government Approved Team B

Before each game the coaches will be required to file reams and reams of paperwork that no one will look at and may file away some place.

Then a fee must be paid to some bureaucracy that will file even more paperwork but will actually do nothing for the money that they have taken but will threaten you with fines and/or prison for not paying them.

Then we get rid of all types of scoring mechanisms.  It’s not fair to the children to keep score because someone could feel bad.

Besides, doesn’t sports cause people to breath heavier which causes them to exhale more carbon dioxide which contributes to global warming and makes their carbon footprint bigger?

    Let’s just ban sports.
