Content of School Lunches Doesn’t Influence Childhood Obesity

Great.

Junk food in middle school does not lead to weight gain in children.

A study followed nearly 20,000 students from kindergarten through the eighth grade in 1,000 public and private schools. The researchers examined the children’s weight and found that in the eighth grade, 35.5 percent of kids in schools with junk food were overweight while 34.8 percent of those in schools without it were overweight—a statistically insignificant increase.

In other words, kids with access to junk food at school were no heavier than those without.

  1. I think that’s kinda like the old mom adage that food you eat off your kids’ plates so as not to waste it has no calories.

Ugh. As a father of three who’s gained more weight than my wife with each pregnancy, I know all too well the veracity of that myth. Early on, mom is nauseous so I help prevent waste. Later on, baby is big, mom is full quicker, and again can’t help finish up.

Problem is, I don’t lose the weight on delivery day.

  3. It’s not the junk food they get at school, it’s the junk food they get at home, and lack of excerise.

  5. Sharing: A study by Paul Johnson and Paul Kenny at the Scripps Research Institute (2008) suggested that junk food consumption alters brain activity in a manner similar to addictive drugs like cocaine or heroin.[6] After many weeks with unlimited access to junk food, the pleasure centers of rat brains became desensitized, requiring more food for pleasure. After the junk food was taken away and replaced with a healthy diet, the rats starved for two weeks instead of eating nutritious fare.[7] A 2007 British Journal of Nutrition study found that mothers who eat junk food during pregnancy increased the likelihood of unhealthy eating habits in their children.[8]. Thus, whether you are at school or at home better to get rid off the junk foods for you and for your children.
