Conflicting Stories

So… Rep. Ann Hraychuck (D-Balsam Lake) was removed from the Assembly Special Committee on Clean Energy Jobs today.  They are currently considering the devastating global warming bill that the Democrats want to ram through at the end of the legislative session before they lose power.

Why?

Rep. Hraychuck says it’s because she expressed reservations about the bill so the Democratic leadership threw her off the committee to discipline her.

The Democrats say that they were responding to Republican criticism about the lopsidedness of the committee (as if a 6-3 split is any better than a 7-3 split).

The Republicans say that she was taken off the committee to protect her from having to vote on a controversial bill since she is in a swing district.

Who is right?

If I had to bet, I’d say that the Republicans are right and Rep. Hraychuck and the Democrats are trying to cover themselves.  The Democrats wouldn’t want to punish her by throwing her off a committee because they may need her vote when the legislation hits the floor.  Plus, it would have been more effective for her to vote against the bill in committee if she wanted to show balance to her constituents.  The bill would still get out of committee on a 6-4 vote and she could go home and claim to have voted against it.  The Democrats’ excuse is just idiotic.  If they were trying to be more bipartisan on the committee they wouldn’t have just removed Hraychuck.  They would have allowed a Republican appointment or two in her place.

If you’re a voter in Hraychuck’s district, don’t be fooled.  She’s playing you.

  3. George,

If I had my druthers, I’d prefer that Hraychuck were right.  Then I could lambaste the Democrats for their thuggery with their own caucus.

But I look forward to your analysis.

  4. Yea, since when would the Democrat Majority bend to the whims of the Republican Minority to have her removed? Never.

This bill has been out there for months, and substitute amendment or no substitute amendment, you either love it or hate it.  You really don’t need time to reflect.

And this whole “I need to go back and talk to my constituents” is the biggest load of crap ever shoveled.

  5. I already wrote about this today so I won’t go on at length.  I will just say that the Democrats were stupid to put Hraychuck (or anyone in a swing district) on a committee that is specifically addressing a topic that is so easily turned into a partisan brawl, and today is apparently the day they finally realized that.  Better late than never.

They should’ve left Hraychuck out and let her offer a couple of softball amendments on the floor to help “fix” the bill.  That way she can claim she improved what was originally offered.  She appeases the left by voting yes and she saves face in the middle by arguing that things would’ve been worse without her help.  Now they’ve just got a hot mess.

These guys govern as badly as the Assembly Republicans handled themselves in the ‘07 session.  At least the Dems didn’t need 15 votes from the other side of the aisle to get a budget passed.

  11. Now i personally think that the Democrats are getting worried, and want to try to protect her by not having her have to vote on such a touchy subject. She is going to have a good fight on her hands this November and i myself hopes she looses. She has continued to vote party lines so to speak. Vote down trails etc. too. Now with her voting down the trail systems in the county, and not fighting to open up the Gandy Dancer etc. for ATV’S and make it dual use, What kind of message does that send to Polaris? Who by the way is probably one of the biggest if not the biggest employers of Polk Co. With jobs tough as they are right now we can not afford to loose Polaris too! Osceola has already lost Motorbooks, ” I never heard of any one fighting to keep them around and why not? They were a great Company and employed lots of people and were and still are at least for the next 3 years to one of the greatest car shows ever put on, let alone what the rest of wheels and wings brings to our community. We can not afford to loose the rest!  Now i could go on and on on several other subjects concerning her votes on several other topics as well.  We need someone in office to fight for us, to represent us. Not just to vote on party lines, whether it is right or wrong. I don’t care if one is democrat or republican, every one has there faults, including me and you! But now it is time for someone to actually Represent the people and the community who elected them!
