Wisconsin is on track to save a projected $63 million over 17 months, following changes in the way it buys prescription drugs for people in state health programs.
The changes, which took effect this year, enable the state to buy prescription drugs indirectly through a purchasing cooperative that negotiates prices with pharmaceutical companies.
The state previously paid health maintenance organizations a set amount each month to cover the cost of prescription drugs. The HMOs oversee the health care for more than half of those enrolled in the BadgerCare Plus program.

The provision of the budget that allowed the changes wasn’t added until late October, and Helgerson said its late addition may have been a factor in its being passed by the Legislature.
