I admit, I’m all geeked out about the Apollo 11 anniversary.
Forty years ago today, Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The space race against the U.S.S.R. had ended, and President John F. Kennedy’s 1960 declaration that the United States would land a man on the moon had proved true.
“He put the challenge in front of us and set us to do it,” said Gerald Griffin, Apollo 11 flight director and 1956 Texas A&M University graduate. “It was a great day.”
There was a time in my life when, like a lot of boys, I wanted to be an astronaut. I went to Space Camp four times (technically, Space Camp, Space Academy, Space Academy II, and Aviation Challenge). I idolized the pioneers of space. It didn’t work out for me, but our astronauts and the people who support them truly are some of America’s best.
When I was a kid, I went to Space Port, which was a local video arcade where I played Space Invaders.
