Canada Expels American Deserter

Thanks Canada!

Canada has ordered the deportation of the first woman US soldier to have sought asylum in the country to avoid being deployed to Iraq.

Kimberly Rivera, a mother of three, had requested permission to remain in Canada on humanitarian grounds but her appeal was rejected.

She could face up to five years in prison when she returns to the US.

Some 200 deserters from the US military are believed to have fled to Canada, some living incognito.

Mrs Rivera served in Iraq in 2006 but deserted a year later after refusing to be redeployed.

Wow.  Two posts about Canada in one day, eh?

  1. So…join the ALL VOLUNTEER military and think you’ll never see combat?  Never go somewhere unsafe?

    Thanks Canada.

  2. This lady is a disgrace. I read her story. If you are going to be in the military - you have to go where they send you.

She should have called her CO and asked for a dishonorable discharge. She probably would have gotten it.

  3. If she’d done it right she’d get C.O. status and an Administrative.

  4. As noted above, there are easier ways to avoid combat than desertion.  Besides, if you join the military, you pretty much know what you’re getting into when you sign up.

Or did she only listen to the part about tuition reimbursement?
