Burke Hired By State

Nice.

Former state Sen. Brian Burke (D-Milwaukee), convicted of one felony and one misdemeanor in connection with the largest public misconduct investigation in state history, has been hired as an assistant public defender by the state.

He started Monday and will be paid $48,458 a year.

Burke, 50, applied for the job last October, after the state Supreme Court reinstated his law license, said Randy Kraft, spokesman for the Public Defender’s Office.

“He has satisfied his debt to society,” Kraft said. “We were certainly aware of his convictions.”

  1. Nice to see that Lionel Hutz is gainfully employed again.

  2. Perhaps the “D” behind these names should be replaced with “OD” = Okey Dokey!

  3. What does “nice” mean?

Brian Burke will do an effective job and there is no reason for him not to have this position.

  4. “Nice” as in “Nice-this bum, now a convicted felon, is back at the public trough”

  5. I wonder who owed him favors, might be interesting to find out if he served time for anyone who may have held sway in this hiring decision.

Anyway, public defenders are a dime a dozen anyway. You could get a law degree off the internet and get a job as a public defender.

  6. Yes, as evidenced by Randy Koshnick’s legal background, just about anyone can be a public defender.

Again, people can slam Burke if they want.  His overreaching in his ‘02 AG campaign was especially tragic, because he would’ve won handily even had he not been breaking the law, and he would’ve been a far better AG than Peg Lautenschlager.  Brian Burke was one of the smartest, nicest guys the legislature had in the 90’s and early part of this decade.  Until he got carried away, his service was very much an asset to Wisconsin.

So say what you want about his character.  He’s undoubtedly talented enough to be an effective public defender.
