Budget Repair Bill Quick Hits

I’ll have a full rundown of the budget repair bill that was released today later this evening.  Here’s a couple of quick thoughts to ponder in the meantime.

1) There have not been any veto assurances from Doyle.  If you think it’s bad now, just wait until Doyle gets his veto pen out.

2) This passed out of the conference committee earlier.  Curiously enough, Speaker Huebsch did not have Assembly Majority Leader Jeff Fitzgerald to vote on it.  Rep. Kitty Rhoades went instead.  Rhoades tends to be moderate and Fitz is generally a solid conservative.  Is there a split in the Assembly GOP leadership?

  1. I think it has as much, if not more, to do with Little Fitz not wanting to go down with the ship.  If Kitty was smart, she’d get the hell away from Huebsch too.  Alas, as co-chair of JFC, that’s trickier for her.

The ship’s sinking, and the Huebsch loyalists likely won’t find themselves in an advantageous position next session.  Half the room will blame the caucus’ failures on catering too much to SE WI leggies, and the other half will blame the failures on not catering enough.

Whatever his motivation, Little Fitz would be smart to take a couple steps back from this mess if he hopes to have any political future in that caucus.

  2. Yeah this is a horrible “repair” but at least Gov. Doyle can’t use the Frankenstein veto this time.
