Bridge Collapses In Minneapolis

We pray for those in Minneapolis.

A busy highway bridge that spans the Mississippi River just northeast of Minneapolis collapsed during rush hour Wednesday, sending a school bus, other vehicles and tons of concrete crashing into the water.

The entire span of the Interstate 35W bridge collapsed about 6:05 p.m. A tractor-trailer caught fire, and flame and black smoke billowed into the sky.

Local media reported 20 to 30 injuries and one death. NBC News reported that every Minneapolis ambulance had been requested to the scene.

  1. How soon before they start to blame Busah and the GOP.  Oh wait, Daily Kos already has posters blaming Bush.  Sick bastards.

  2. I wonder what the report will show as cause. Bridge collapse is an odd thing after something has stood for 40 years. Wonder if there was high wind during the collapse?

My mind swings to terrorism…no matter what homeland security says. The best way to fight terrorism in my mind is to deny it the publicity it feeds on.

    So sad.

  3. From what I have heard, there was no severe weather at that time, and even if there were, the bridge should have handled it.  There was some minor work being done, but again, that shouldn’t have done anything.  The bridge was inspected last year and passed.
For them to say right away that it was not terrorism seems wrong, but hey have done many times.
Another possibility is that a boat damaged the pilings some time in the past and that may have had something to do with it.
Whatever the cause, and it will probably take months and years to find out, it is a tragedy.

  4. Also, watching the news, it sounds like the police, fire and other emergency personnel did a fantastic job, along with the volunteers that helped out in the beginning.

  5. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of MN.

Two people who I went to high school with live there.  They’re supposed to be married this month, but I don’t know how to get in contact with them.  I hope they’re both okay…

This is a prime example of why it’s a good idea for us to know basic First Aid and CPR, something I need to re-learn this year anyway.  Our presence in a tragedy like this could mean life or death for our neighbor…

  6. Why did you have to turn this to politics right away?  People died.  It is a tragedy.  At least give the people time to mourn before you start crying about partisan issues.

  7. Shana I think you and Dan are saying the same thing…except, inexplicably, you are criticizing him as being partisan for criticizing Dailykos for being partisan.

So I guess I could criticize you for criticizing Dan for criticizing Daily Kos?

If you want turning it into politics “right away” the very first comment on Daily Kos was “we spend billions in Iraq while we fall apart at home” posted at 6:36 PM, roughly 15 minutes after the bridge fell.

  8. Sorry, I don’t read Daily Kos.  I merely have a problem with people taking it to politics without even stopping to remember that people have died.  Give them some respect.  I’m sure there were a few partisan people in the accident, and I’m guessing they aren’t worried about which “side” they’re on right now.

  9. Shana:

You’re right.  But as k2aggie07 pointed out, the first instance of politicized commentary came from the left.  And is continuing to come from the left.

Me, I’m just sorry this happened and I’m trying to find out if the two people I know are okay.

  10. So because “the left” did it, “the right” has to lower themselves to the same standards?  It’s ridiculous.  All either one of them is doing is making an ass of themselves, instead of being respectful.  And all because politics are more important than people.

Posted by Shana on August 02, 2007 at 1120 hrs

  11. No, because I didn’t politicize it. Neither did Dan. He said that the Kos Kidz were “sick bastards” for politicizing it…which is exactly what you said, only you were criticizing him for agreeing with you.

And now you called him (and presumably, me) an ass. Not very respectful of you. :(

Posted by k2aggie07 on August 02, 2007 at 1328 hrs

  12. Yes, I did call you both an ass.  Because instead of leaving it there, you brought it here.

Posted by Shana on August 02, 2007 at 1405 hrs

  13. Shana, the feeling is mutual, you are an ass for sticking up for the Daily Kos people.  I didn’t polictalize it, the left did.

  14. I’m not sticking up for anyone except the people involved in that accident.  You should have left it where you found it instead of dragging it here.

  15. Why can’t I point out how despicable the left is?  Are you afraid of that?  It would have been nice if they also expressed sympathy for the people in Minnesota, but they are so deranged that they had to blame Bush within an hour of the accident.  And you don’t want to expose the world to their derangement?  I would have been just as happy to say that the DailyKos and their readers/posters would have expressed sympathy, but they didn’t.  They are the ones who are asses and sick bastards.  And the same would go for right, if they posted similar, sick messages.

  16. “Why can’t I point out how despicable the left is?”

If you can’t see why this isn’t an appropriate time for your, or dailkos’, litttle identity politics pissing contest then I have very little hope for the future of this country (a feeling that is only comforted by the fact that, off the internet, the vast majority of people don’t filter things through your “hate the other team” lens).

  17. Thank you Jason.  I was trying to find a reasonable way to put it so they’d understand.

This whole issue has nothing to do with politics.  So what if some lefty blasted Bush right away?  Why do you care?  The guy’s an ass if he’s doing it.  But instead of being the “bigger man”, you decided to drag it across the internet and bring it up here.  You are more worried about how the left is bashing your guy, than you are about how people died.  If you can’t see that, then you’ve become exactly what you supposedly hate about the left.

  18. That those people are despicable ought to go without saying. Your lumping everyone “on the left” doesn’t make you a whole lot better.

People who cannot separate politics from personality are psychopaths.

  19. You are correct in that I am making a generalized statement about the “left”, however I am not ignoring the “right” either.  Both sides have idiots.  I am not advocating the actions of either “side”.  What I have a problem with, which is what I have been stating from the beginning, is that because someone on another site chose to bash Bush, someone had to bring it up here.  Why?  What purpose does it serve?  Instead of mourning the loss of fellow human beings regardless of political affiliation, he chose to bring partisan politics here.

And by the way, your statement about psychopaths had damn well better not be directed at me.  You want to talk about separating personality and politics?  Then get a grip on yourself.  There are far too many people both here and in other arenas who are so hung up on their own version of politics that they can’t see two inches in front of their own faces.  A large number of people, mostly the ones voicing their opinions loudly against the “other side”, get their undies in a bundle because someone on the “other side” said something bad about one of their leaders.  It happens on both “sides”, and it’s childish and ridiculous.  So instead of arguing about what “side” said what about who, why don’t we start dealing with the real issues at hand.  Then perhaps we can get somewhere.

  20. In my last post, it does appear that I lumped the whole left together and for that, I was wrong.  I was referring to the DailyKos jerks who went over the line.  No, not all the people on the left are like that.
However, I stand by what I said, that those sick people over on the DailyKos and other places need to be exposed for thier vile.  If not now, then when?

  21. How about writing your own article on your own blog?  You want to link to it, fine, but why bring it up directly in a discussion about the tragedy that happened?  It’s just not appropriate.

Posted by Shana on August 02, 2007 at 1758 hrs

  22. LOL, Shana, I bet we think exactly the same on this. I was responding to Dan.

And it seems we agree with Dan. Let’s just all agree DailyKos are idiots and crack a beer.

Key word: Center. Just like me.

  23. Sorry if I got a little hot under the collar, I guess this whole thing is really just pissing me off.  I see it so often, when an issue is non-partisan, and because someone makes an idiotic statement, it gets dragged across the internet.  So what if someone said something that wasn’t nice?  Get over it.

Yeah, I’d probably be considered center only because I don’t follow the Dems or the Reps.  Both sides are nuts, and really aren’t all that much different from each other.

Back to the main issue though, I really hope they’re able to find everyone in this mess.  I feel awful for the families who are still waiting for answers.  I can’t imagine what they must be going through right now.
