Brett Favre To Be Reinstated

Sigh...

Brett Favre will be reinstated and added to the Green Bay Packers’ active roster Monday.

The NFL announced the move Sunday. Commissioner Roger Goodell had held off on granting Favre’s request for reinstatement for nearly a week. He hoped Favre and the team could resolve their standoff. By reinstating Favre, Goodell is following through on a recent promise to force action.

The reinstatement will become effective at noon on Monday.

UPDATE: He’ll compete for the starting job.

The Green Bay Packers are through negotiating with quarterback Brett Favre on a marketing deal and they are anticipating him reporting for training camp Monday and being on the field as soon as he passes his physical, a Packers source said.

Another source close to the club, said that the Packers have agreed to allow Favre to compete with Aaron Rodgers for the starting job and he won’t necessarily be the backup this season. Trade talks with Favre have not advanced and coach Mike McCarthy is expected to come up with a plan that will split the practice repetitions with Rodgers.

  1. On the plus side, it probably means the fiasco is almost over.

If I’m the Packers, I’d sit Favre down, hand him a clipboard, and tell him that if he wants an unconditional release, they’ll give it to him - sometime in October.  By that point, nobody will pick him up to start unless they’re dealing with an injured QB, and that means if Favre wanted to play this year, he’d have little to no choice in where he ended up.  Think Minnesota wants to bring him in mid-season to learn their system on the fly?

I still think he takes the money and that this is a negotiating ploy.  But I could be wrong.

  2. Given A-Rod’s inclination towards injury, he may be starting at GB come October anyway.

  3. Good!  One thing Packer fans were worried about was having no veteran backup QB behind Aaron Rodgers.

  4. Injury prone, Tony?  Why, because he got his foot stepped on against the Patriots in 2006?  It might be worth giving him some time before trying to tag him with that label.  You don’t exactly have a very valid sample size, considering he’s been a backup for three years.

  5. Dude, the guy pulled a hamstring in practice in December last year and was out the rest of the regular season.  They had to bring Nall back.  Remember?

  6. Interesting language:  ‘trade talks have not advanced.’

Either the Packers will not trade him to teams that want him, OR the Packers can’t get what they want for him.

    Interesting.

  7. “The rest of the regular season.”  So what was that, two games?  Save from getting his foot stepped on in a freak accident, he’s been hurt once in three years.  You make it sound like the guy is a china doll without ever having seen the guy in action on a regular basis.

Also, I rescind my earlier remarks.  Apparently the Packers have found a way to continue this circus.  At this point, the only way McCarthy can save face is if he basically says this is Aaron Rodgers’ job to lose.  Otherwise, he looks like a bald-faced liar in front of his whole team.  And if they let Favre start, they better at least have a two-year commitment out of him.  Otherwise they’re messing everything up for one season?  That’s foolish.

I have a feeling this job is still very much Aaron Rodgers’ job to lose, and I still wouldn’t be surprised that if Rodgers ends up the starter that Favre gets dealt or released sometime in the early weeks of the season.

  8. Four games.

For what it’s worth, I hope he has a long, productive career.  I loved Favre, but I’m personally tired of the yearly drama.
