Brett Favre Retires

So says Fox Sports.

FOXSports.com has learned that legendary quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire. In fact, it’s believed he informed the Packers of his decision within the last few days, although it’s unclear when Favre and the team will make his decision known.

So barring an unforeseen last-minute change of heart, Favre will leave the game after 17 years, during which he built himself into a household name and a figure synonymous with grit, toughness and perseverance.

There will be no other news reporting in Wisconsin for 36 hours.

  1. We will be the only news market in the country where off-season football coverage will trump election coverage on the late local news.

  2. I dont even know how those insensitive sots in Ohio and Texas can even go to the polls today.  Can we all just set politics aside for a minute and remember what is really important in this world.  Bu Bye Brett.

  3. I’m a little suprised.  I’m not a big sports fan, more of just an interested observer of all sports phenomenon in general.  No emotional connection to any particular team of any type but…

In previous years he seemed to indicate that his coming back was really rooted in a desire and a question of how good the team would be and their chances at having a successful season.

In other words, he wanted to come back and win, but not come back and lose.

Having had such a successful year, I thought he’d be back for sure.

I wondered after his poor performance in the cold games in Chicago and the championship game if he was just too old to operate in the cold anymore.

  4. I think that you are underestimating the impact.  This will be the lead story through the weekend.

  5. Too bad there isn’t a snow storm coming, their heads would explode.  TVs would only show a little picture in the middle with scrolling Farvre coverage on top and cancellations on the bottom.  Or are we going to see Farvre cancellations tonight.  Flags at half staff?  I was wondering what all the wailing was about coming from the hall.

  6. The end of an era. Sounds like the Packers really didn’t want him back. I can’t wait to watch the team implode this year under Rodgers and to watch all the people who were complaining that Favre was washed up to be begging him to come back.

Thanks Brett for 17 seasons of hard work and showing us what true champions are made of!

  7. Anyone think this has anything to do with the announcement yesterday that Randy Moss re-signed with the Patriots.  I think Brett wanted Moss, and when the news came that Moss signed with NE, it helped cement his decision.

A great man, great player, great athlete, great role model, a legend.  There will never be another one like him.

  8. I hope there isn’t any truth in the rumor that Moss’s resigning had something to do with his decision.

  10. grin
This is good news for us Bears fans in Wisconsin.  Brett played well, but it seemed the cold and snow got the best of him this year.  Now the rest of the teams in the North Div. will be on more or less equal footing for quarterbacks.  Good luck Aaron Rogers!

  11. I’m sad to see him go.  He was an outstanding quarterback, and a pretty level-headed, humble guy too (at least compared to pretty -boy QBs like Tom Brady).

I’m optimistic that Rodgers will be able to hold his own and that the Packers will have a decent season. smile

  12. Anyone else fear he’ll unretire somewhere warmer or in a dome?

  13. ESPN is reporting that the Moss re-signing with the Patriots did play into the decision. The report notes Brett committed to Randy to play on for multiple seasons if he came to Green Bay, but the Packer front office made no effort to woo him to Green Bay.

As to the Packers imploding, I would not be so certain. There were some years the Packers did not do too well with Brett. This game is a team sport.

  15. G2tazman,

It sure is, I have been a Bear fan all my life, and I must say that Brett Farve was with no doubt the best quarterback ever..

There isnt another quarterback anywhere that could complete a pass while falling to the turf, 2 inches from the ground, and the pass was a perfect spiral and right on target.

Bear fans everywhere wish for a quarterback thats 1/2 of what Brett was.

I wont miss him beating us, but I will miss the rest.

  17. And what other news should be covered???????  Did you complain about non-stop coverage on 9-11? Should the world’s attention have been elsewhere when the beaches of Normandy were being stormed?
