Bracelets for Sex

I’ve seen kids wearing these, and never gave it a second thought. One can only hope the significance attached to these is not nearly as widespread as the bracelets actually are.

A new trend, which has some parents and school officials concerned and may very well shock others, has surfaced in Marion County. The newest twist on Truth or Dare, the game involves wearing colored rubber bracelets, which have various meanings, some sexual.

Students break the bracelets off one another and then are supposedly entitled to specific acts, some as innocent as a hug, others sexually explicit.

Students say the bracelets, and their hidden meanings, became popular during the last school year. Inside classrooms and hallways, students—boys and girls—would grab at each other’s bracelets, hoping to snap one off.

Though there is talk of Web sites providing codes, the various meanings behind the bracelets apparently are devised by students and have no consistency. However, some of the meanings may come as a surprise to parents. One e-mail from a teacher concerning the sixth-grade code stated that a red bracelet stands for a “lap dance” while a blue one symbolized oral sex.

Perhaps these bracelets can be used for good. If a blue bracelet means oral sex, then a girl who is not willing to perform oral sex shouldn’t wear a blue bracelet. This would be great at college parties. Kind of like the whole Antioch College thing when we were in college where students were told they had to ask permission before doing anything: “May I kiss you?” “Yes you may.” The bracelets just skip the asking step. An offer is made, an offer is accepted.

Okay, that’s just a load of crap, if I see any of these bracelets on my girls, I’ll have to kick some butts.

That said, I had a ton of those bracelets, but that’s just because I was an 80s kid. The only meaning back then was that I was a dork.

A parent quoted in the article says something along the lines of “They need to ban those bracelets”. How silly. The bracelets are not the problem. The problem is a culture that pushes sex on children. Until we’re willing to do something about that - either seriously limit sexual content in the media or teach our children that sex at a young age can have negative consequences, or both - then kids will replace any banned sex games with other games. Anyway, they don’t need bracelets to actually do the stuff the bracelets symbolize.

Good God. I have alot of those bracelets, thats all they are. Some little middle school kids thought it would be cute to come up with gay crap like the whole kissing, ect. thing. For goodness sakes! You peple are making a big deal of this. Those bracelets are just our way of stating that we aren’t afraid to push the limits but we don’t anyway! Those are just fun little symbols that we younger ones should have.They let you as the parents know that we still have our verginity! By we i mean only that i am a middle schooler and i know how these things work. There is nothing about color codes or atleast thats not how it was ever intended. Going back to the symbols thing, i’d like to add that most of you let your little ones wear rings and necklaces and wrist bands write? Well these are no different. my neice recently ask me to buy her black and red jelly bracelets for Christmas….I didnt know about the whole sex bracelet thing until today (A friend informed me)! My neice is 11 years old…..!

I also saw this story on the news and was shocked. My daughter and i have a very close relationship and as we were discussing this topic she filled me in on what the different colors REALLY mean:

red - likes brittney spears
blue - dislikes brittney spears
orange - N’Sync fan
purple - rainbow brite fan
silvery - likes care bears
black - likes my little pony
pink - dislikes my little pony
yellow - sodomy

I hope this clears up any misinformation about the so called “sex bracelets”. I for one am tiring of this yellow journalism on the television.

My cousin mat who is in 7th grade told me that most of it is true, though most kids are brave enough to wear/break the bracelets, but too chicken shit to follow through. Braclets are a reprsentative of whatever you want to believe. Some of these posts in here about how people have sexual intentions over them is downright funny and very interesting. Then again my friends and I are very perverted.

As a person who remembers being there, I bet I would’ve done it, but I know I would’ve regretted it years later. Or much sooner then that. I accidently got a girl pregnant and spent years of my life trying to make things work. She and my son are now moved far away and the pain is unbearable. What ever the meaning of the bracelets, I think the schools stand is that if something is distracting students from getting 100% of the educational learning experience they are entitled to then get rid of it. I’m sure to most kids they wear them and the colors they choose simply because they like them and the color matches their outfit. It’s no different than some schools that have banned certain colors or clothing types because they are associated with gangs. Some schools ban hair coloring, or certain types of body piercings, and visible tatoo’s also.

dude all you people are insane. i wore those damn bracelets through middle school and just because some horny children decided it would be funny to play games, it doesn’t mean everyone treats those bracelets the same way. in middle school, the kids aren’t even serious the majority of the time when speaking of sex. my friends and i joked about sex from 5th grade on, that didn’t mean we were ready to get down and dirty. half the kids probably have no idea what they are talking about. and as for banning them, isn’t that a bit drastic? this is so ridiculous.

i just saw this on the new today, and before that, i’ve never even heard of these so called “sex bracelets.” i don’t think that this is as widespread as the media has made it seem, and if you’ve read all the meanings of the colors above, you can see that there isn’t really a universal meaning for any of the colors, there’s even one about britney spears and justin timberlake, o.O Now that the news are all over it and people are making a bracelet ban, it will become ever more popular. i’m in middle school, and lots of people at my school wear jelly bracelets or dangles and there’s really no meaning to it except that they’re cool lookin’. Its just a small faction of bored kids who thought it would be funny to make a gross little game out of an innocent fad.

PS. And is it just me, or are most of the reports saying that the game is being played amonst 5th and 6th graders? eesh. -_- gross. oh, and i agree with what Kat said.

I think you people are pathetic. I’ve always worn those Jelly bracelets and noone at my school ever wore them until a shitty singer known as avril lavigne came out. Everyone went out and bought them then. Everyone at my school wears them and noone snaps off the bracelets at school and expect to get whatever it means. The people who THINK you have to do whatever the color is just because a horney ass manwhore breaks your bracelet, you are far from right. You do what you want, not what other people want. i wear the bracelets and they hold no meaning value to me… maybe that’s b/c im not a middleschooler. We just heard about the sexual conotations of these supposed “Sex Bracelets” last night here in San Diego. My 13 yr. old, our 15yr. old neighbor and my 18 yr. old daughter have never heard of this although they have worn the bracelets for several years. Alot of the news websites have been saying that these bracelets are making a comeback from the 80,s and that it was thanks to Madonna, well me and my friends wore them in middle school in the 70’s in New Mexico. We wore the black ones only and created cool looking knots by combining two or three of them. They were simply cool. When I saw them make a come back I bought tons of them for my daughters in every color. They wear either just the black or they will color coordinate with their outfit of the day. We have found this whole story so STUPID!!! We are laughing at the whole idea that a simple fashion statement is some how sexual. I remember when Green m&m’s supposedly made you horny…so now what? No one raide the vending machines and take out all of the m&m’s to protect our innocent children. I’d like to see any school official ban these bracelets so soon after the whole Rancho Bernardo High School Thong incident. Go Search for that story it made national news too. The Vice Principal who initiated it was fired. All I can say is WHAT EVER!!! If my daughter wants to wear a bracelet or a thong she can and it does not make her a slut. What makes a slut is slutty behavior only. You could wear the most modest clothing and still be a slut in disguise. Hmm…this strikes me as complete BS. It’s unbelieveable that any child would be able to concoct a game of this origin… It just doesn’t seem morally possible, especially in 6th grade. I’m in 8th grade, and until about 3 days ago, I hadn’t heard anything about this bracelet/sex crap and to my knowledge…I know it isn’t going on at my school. I can honestly say that any parent or teacher suspecting children of this is paranoid. I’d like to see how many kids actually go through with these stunts. Maybe sex wouldn’t be such a big deal and something children use to feel big and rebellious if parents were’nt restrictive over what children can or can not do. It is because these things are such a taboo subject that kids are drawn to them.

My parents have always been very, VERY easy going on me. I can do what I like when I like, interact with who I like as long as I don’t get hurt.

Have I grown up to be a vandal, dishonest, nasty and overally slutty little girl? No. I’m more or less totally straight-edge. I’m more street-smart than the majority of my overly-mothered friends who now, just getting their independance are abusing it and getting into the worst and most dangerous situations.

So perhaps take this from a child’s viewpoint, I am only sixteen and suggest that you just let your children do it. Most of them won’t have to the guts to follow through with anything; it’s all a show to make them feel tough. And if something does happen, they will learn.. and sometimes kids need to learn the hard way. You can’t watch over them and protect them forever..

And as for the bracelets. I’ve never come across any kind of sexual connotation here in the UK where many people just wear them simply for fashion purposes. I’ve friends who wear them, as they’re mostly what would be defined in this steriotypical society as “punk rockers” and it’s merely a fashion statement to them. Were it given any kind of sexual innuendo then It’d be laughed at and only that.

If a kid is going to go out and grant another sexual favours, they’ll do it reguardless of what they’re wearing on their arms.

This is ridiculous. I’m a 9th grade student, and I wear those braclets. I wasn’t aware of them being a “fad” when I purchased them last year, I was the only kid in the school with them. I think its moronic to support the statement of these braclets being “Sexually explicit”. You are blowing this WAY OUT OF PROPORTION. By saying all of these things you are exploiting the braclets. When I began wearing these “sex” bracelets when I was a freshman, it was no big deal. The only people who wore then were the “outcasts”. Two years later everyone is wearing them. im 17 and this whole thing is really stupid. I would be concidered a punk at my school and i wear about 30 of these bracelets on each of my wrists. I mostly wear black ones but i also have other colors, i have been wearing them for months and this is the 1st i heard of this “snap” game. Well then, I don’t think we need any more examples of what the colors mean. Each school changes the meaning as they see fit. I’m a senior in high school.. and I have a great deal of influence on the lower classmen. We give, take, or exchange these bracelets in order to make friends. There is no “defined code” to what they mean. They are what you make it.. and the game of sex can be played with any tools.

I wear mine on my left arm.. and i give them to new friends when i go to shows/concerts.. And then wear ones they give me on my right arm. I have quite an accumulation.. Why would you break one? That’s like.. wasting a friendship. There are only about 700 people in my school.. We do what we want. Sex is no ones buisness or right to take away from anyone else.

Bracelets are worn because people like them, and like them people do.

So they shall stay. You parents out there.. Just because you don’t talk to your children.. doesn’t mean you should assume everything you hear is true.. the only times these rules are enforced? is in a socially dominant school environment.. people must do it to maintain status or such? it really doesn’t matter.

ok, Im a mother of 2 girls (11 and 9) and I am very open with them about sex. If parents dont teach their kids what it really is, they will try to find out what it is by themselves.As a parent, its my job to protect them until they are adults. Its my job to make sure they stay innocent until marriage, etc. In my opinion, I wouldnt let my kids wear these bracelets smply because of what they represent.its degrading to wear these bracelts. You know. I’m known in my social circle for wearing two spiked, dog-collar, choker things, one with a ring on it.

I was once yelled at by a member of staff at my school because they could be considered “fetish wear” by some. Does this stop me wearing them? No. Simply because though others may use collars as such, it is not what I do with them.

And personally, people can think what they like of me. I am a senior in Niagara Falls, and being a student, I have to say that these bracelets mean absolutly nothing. It was probably just one school where the kids that were doing this just needed some attention. People are just trying to make an uproar about something simple, just to have something to talk about.
I’ve never heard anything about it, until a friend referred me to this website. I think that these kids just need attetion. Maybe there families should give them a better homelife, considering that the divorce rate is 62%.

I am 17 and I live in Michigan, in the Ann Arbor area. Until I read about these “Sex Bracelets” in a friend’s blog, I had no idea they existed, not even from the news, because I don’t watch it. There are a few things I would like to say though-

Kids, will be kids. I remember when I was in middle school we had a thing with starbursts and their colors. Supposedly if you could unwrap a red one fastest with your tongue you were good in bed. Kids make things up like this all the time. Middle school is a time when sexual expirementation is in full swing, and taking into consideration that kids are maturing faster and faster, it is bound to happen. The best a parent can hope for is that they have developed an honest and open relationship with their child and will be able to educate them about the kind of choices they make.

Also, I don’t beleive there is a huge hype over these bracelets in reality. I haven’t heard of them being sold in sex toy supply stores or any of that, so more than likely the Media has lowered it’s standards to the point where Middle School Rumors have been accepted as truth, and that is just plain ridiculous. I hope most people have enough common sense to ignore it and move on in life, and if not, hopefully they will question their child and talk to them about it, instead of imposing a ban based on rumor.

I know that I see these bracelets sold in stores everywhere, and that they have been out for years. Jelly bracelets have been around for decades, and until “punk rock” became a fashion statement, no one really cared about them. They were cute, hip, trendy. So were Jellies (shoes) in the 80’s. If someone takes off a purple shoe from your right foot, are you going to fuck them sideways? Didn’t think so.

Just try to encourage your kids to be open and honest with you. Having a relationship based on trust, not suspicion, will ensure the safety of your children. Ask them to make well-thought out decisions, and not follow a “hype.”

I can’t believe how many comments have been posted on this topic! So many angry kids out there. I really wanted to say that as a mom I would spank all of your butts. Do you really think that we parents should just turn our heads and look the other way when we hear about something that is so potentially damaging to our children. I know that people have sex reagrdless anyway, they don’t need these and if they do then they are putting themselves out there to be known. ok you all need to get over this! PPL at my school are in 6th grade and have done all of this, I personally haven’t, so what? nobody cares! I am sorry but i think that this is all nonsense. I am 14, and i wanted to look it up and see what they meant and i did. when i read it i was very upset… why would they make braclets objecting sex and such. i didnt know and then my neighbor said something, and when i read this i thought why would anyone make something up like that. OK Kids we get the point!
I understand that kids want to do what they want and be their own person, but from a mothers point of view, some kids might not know what or if these colors mean something to other people and could open the doors for some unwanted attention. So… whit that said I would stop my child from wearing them and not because i think they would be out doing this stuff but because there is no telling what someone else would try to do to them.

I’m confused about all of the color meanings but the fact that they can be associated with the bracelets alone is enough for me.

I just hope and pray that parents listen and understand and teach their children about not just what they believe is right or wrong but also how to protect themselves from what is right and wrong. IT’S ALL ABOUT EDUCATION. Education is not only for the school to teach. Life is a subject too, and needs to be taught at home.

Ok, wtf? I wear these braceletes all the time. I used to have like, 25 black ones but they are all gone. Its no big deal if someone breaks one. I guess if you dont want to do it you dont have to, or else dont wear them. My dad doesnt kno wut they mean so when i walk by he sometimes grabbes them and tugs on them.
