Blast From the Present

I currently reading “Veil: The Secret Wars of the CIA, 1981-1987” by Bob Woodward.

It’s fun to see the familiar names pop up.  For instance, on page 159 he is talking about the scandal when Goldwater called for Bill Casey’s (DCI) head in a press conference and the investigation that ensued.  There’s this little mention:

By Friday night, Howard Baker had Goldwater’s agreement to bring in a special counsel to handle the Casey inquiry.  They selected Fred Thompson, who had been Baker’s chief staffer when he was the vice-chairman of the Senate Watergate Committee in 1973-74.

Baker told Thompson that he was trying to calm everyone, but, he said, it was obvious that there was little love for Casey, and that unless Casey could turn it around quickly he was gone; everyone wanted the inquiry completed quickly.  Thompson went to the records, documents, and financial disclosure statements.  It was soon clear that Casey had a financial situation just slightly less complex than that of Aristotle Onassis.  “I like Bill Casey,” said Thompson in his slow Tennessee drawl, “but I like my ass better.”  So there could be only one way: a complete investigation.

  1. I read this last year.  Really good take on the intelligence community in the 80s.  It really shows how the reckless actions of Casey just just about destroyed the intelligence community and almost took down a president.

  2. They have enjoyed the actions that cut Commanders In Chief off at the knee’s.
Woodward never aggresses Frank Church and his attempts, in the seventies, to castrate the CIA and every intelligence acency responsible for our protection.

Woodward is a hack and a populist.

Tell me how the Dems and Church Commission gutted our intelligence less then two years prior to us suffering 449 days of US citizens held captive?
This country has been gouged by thousands of deaths at the hands of the policy of Frank Church and the Dems. Report that story and I might raise an eye to read anything Woodward writes.
You may find it “fun” to read “familiar names” but the fact remains that those are human lives.
Yea, I read history too, but my snickers are reserved for those who suffered vengence.
Keep in mind, insert brain before inserting tongue.
