Black Caucus To Allow Republicans to Join

How nice of them.

The Congressional Black Caucus says it will allow two recently elected black Republicans to join the group if they ask.

The all-Democratic caucus had wavered over the issue since Tim Scott of South Carolina and Allen West of Florida were elected last week. Chairwoman Barbara Lee had pointed to the group’s liberal mission statement as a potential point of conflict.

But in a statement Tuesday, the group said the two would be welcomed if they request membership.

  3. Apparently it’s not so easy to come up with a definition that includes only those who are “authentically black,” as opposed to merely being African American.

In any case, the race test apparently applies to the representative, not to the represented. That is, the Black Caucus has rejected non-black representatives who represent majority-black districts.

“Mr. Cohen [who represented a majority-black district] asked for admission, and he got his answer. He’s white and the Caucus is black. It’s time to move on. We have racial policies to pursue and we are pursuing them,” said Rep. William Lacy Clay, Jr., D-Mo
