Better Off Dead

This isn’t so shocking.

Berlin Zoo’s abandoned polar bear cub Knut looks cute, cuddly and has become a front-page media darling, but an animal rights activist insisted Monday he would have been better off dead than raised by humans.

“Feeding by hand is not species-appropriate but a gross violation of animal protection laws,” animal rights activist Frank Albrecht was quoted as saying by the mass-circulation Bild daily, which has featured regular photo spreads tracking fuzzy Knut’s frolicking.

“The zoo must kill the bear.”

After all, some people think that way about disabled people and babies.

  1. After all, some people think that way about disabled people and babies.

    Where is that coming from?

I am no big fan of zoos but if this guy is worried about species appropriate feeding throw him in the bear quarters.

  2. Some people say that kids who are found to have certain disabilities in the womb should be aborted because they won’t be able to have a “decent quality of life.”  Some people think that disabled people should be euthanized because they can’t have a normal quality of life.  It’s pretty rampant.

  3. I know of a few people who say that if they knew their child was going to be gay in the womb, they’d kill it.  There are a lot of differing opinions out there.

  4. Do you really or are you just saying that to attack conservatives?  I’ve never heard anyone say that and anyone who does must be a real wacko.

  5. How is it an attack on conservatives? I never mentioned the political leanings to begin with, and conservatives are generally anti-abortion..why would you even assume I meant conservatives??  As I said, there are a lot of differing opinions and I think most people fall within a wide range of political or social leanings.  It does pose a dilemma for all sides, however…to know you might be able to identify a “gay baby” in utero.

  6. One place that it comes from is Princeton’s Professor of Bioethics Dr. Peter Singer.  I was forced to read this guy in college - in English not philosophy class.  Mr. Singer has argued that it is okay to harvest the organs from and then kill cognitively disabled people and old people who have lost their faculties.

  7. Actually, in the Netherlands, I believe, they do euthansia on babys with disabilities.  I work with children who are severely physically and mentally disabled and I have heard comments many times about how these would be better off dead.

  8. Dan and Joe, there are many many many Americans who believe in euthansia of disabled and elderly.
Most have not come out of the closet yet.  They’re too busy with all their “troop supporting” at the moment.
