Barrett Proposes Relatively Responsible Budget

Gee, one would think he’s running for governor or something.

For the first time since he was elected, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is trying to craft a city budget that doesn’t raise either property taxes or major user fees - right in the middle of his campaign for governor.

Barrett and his aides say the zero-tax-increase goal isn’t politically motivated and has more to do with the economy and the city pension fund than the election.

Uh huh.  The economy has been hurting for several years now and it’s been even more prolonged in Milwaukee.  Yet, despite the fact that Barrett has proposed a levy and fee increase in every singe budget while he’s been mayor, NOW he wants to hold back?

Whatever.

Barrett is trying to change his skin.  It’s not believable.

  1. Barrett is trying to change his skin.  It’s not believable.

Maybe not by you folks who know him, but let me tell you that for the rest of the state that doesn’t really know or have a strong opinion of either candidate, he’s kicking Walker’s rear end so far. His commercials are very well done - he’s defining himself as a smaller government, reduce bureaucracy guy and not a “Madison politician.” And he’s selling it well - with sincerity. (what’s the groucho quote?...“The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.”

Whoever is running his campaign is better than anything I’ve seen from the Republicans lately.  Doyle was such a slimeball I figured it would be an easy victory for the Governor’s mansion for the Republicans. I have zero confidence in their ability to run a good campaign and ultimately win a tough race.

  2. Kicking Walker’s behind? LOL. Do you read the polls?

  3. If that’s what it takes for Barrett to be fiscally responsible, I think he should run for higher office more often (and lose, of course).

  4. Since I have skin in the game when it comes to the Milwaukee budget, I say good for Mayor Barrett… Whatever the circumstances under which it is undertaken, fiscal responsibility is always admirable.

As far as Barrett kicking Walker’s behind… I don’t see, or hear it. I live in and spend much of my time (outside of work) in Sheboygan County… I know that Walker is the preferred candidate here. I see Walker bumper stickers, yard signs, and spraypainted 8x10’ plywood signs with his name all over the place.

On the other hand, there is still a lot of trepidation about either candidate, since they are both firmly rooted in Milwaukee politics.

  5. If I wasn’t clear enough, my apologies - the rear kicking I was referring to wasn’t in the polls or where I think things will end up.  In terms of selling their candidate - defining him in a manner most attractive to those that are unfamiliar with both men, I stand by said tail kicking. For folks more familiar with both men and their performance, obviously it’s a different situation entirely.
