Baldwin Calls for Impeachment

The good news is...

U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, and two other senior members of the House Judiciary Committee have called for the immediate opening of impeachment hearings for Vice President Richard Cheney.

Baldwin and fellow Democrats Robert Wexler of Florida and Luis Gutierrez of Illinois on Friday distributed a statement, “A Case for Hearings,” that declares, “The issues at hand are too serious to ignore, including credible allegations of abuse of power that if proven may well constitute high crimes and misdemeanors under our Constitution. The charges against Vice President Cheney relate to his deceptive actions leading up to the Iraq war, the revelation of the identity of a covert agent for political retaliation, and the illegal wiretapping of American citizens.”

Rational Democrats aren’t going to touch this with a ten foot pole.  There’s less than a year until the elections.  The last thing the eventual presidential nominee wants to be bogged down in is an impeachment dominating the news cycle for months on end.  Plus, impeachment hearings have an unpredictable effect on the public.  It could easily backfire.

Baldwin is just underlining why she’s irrelevant in Washington.

  1. She apparently hasn’t read this leading story from the Washington Post:

  4. Yeah, impeachment is unpredictable, especially since people could read through the real reasons why the GOP was after Clinton.

As for Bush, most Americans want some level of judgement on Bush and he has practically begged for it.

In this bubble Bush is a wonderful president.

In many other countries a leader like this who has screwed up as much as he has would have had the dignity to resign.

Like John Nichols says, the Constitution practically demands this president gets impeached.

  5. Nice, Owen.  Duly elected representatives want to discuss the abuse of power and potential impeachment of the president, and instead of taking a position on the actual issue all you can think to say is something about how it might affect the 08 horse race.

Sorry Keith, if that were the case it would have happened already.

  7. Yeah.  And if it were really true that the majority of Americans want the Iraq war to end, it would have happened already.

  8. I think Bush is a criminal.  But I say don’t impeach. Wait until the Democrats have control of the White House and Justice Department.  Then arrest him and Cheney when they’re civilians.  I think we stand a much better chance of convicting them in that scenario than doing it while they’re in office.  It’s a timing issue.  By the time an impeachment would even have enough votes to get under way, these guys would be leaving office anyway.

  9. There’s hardly a half a dozen people in Washington with the balls to do it.  It’s a shame.
