Avatar

I went to see Avatar this afternoon.  I’d give it a five out of ten.  The special effects were phenomenal and the various critters were interesting, but the plot was a very standard sci-fi fallback and the characters were rather shallow.  The whole “evil humans must kill pure indigenous people to get minerals/gold/water/resources and indigenous folks who are in communion with nature fight back on uneven battlefield yadda yadda yadda” has been done a thousand times.  I was waiting for some new twist on it that never came.  Avatar is worth a watch, but it’s far from anything unique - except, as I said, for the special effects.

On the brighter side, I did see the trailer for the remake of Clash of the Titans - one of my all time favorite movies.  Let’s hope the remake stays true to the claymation special effects of the original.

  1. I dissagree with you, it was alot higher than a 5. Im giving it a 8 maybe a 9. the twist for me was he took the form of them and lived as them. It reminded me of dances with wolves, only in sci fi. i hope i dont spoil it for people who havent seen the movie.

  2. Yeah, that’s a little twist, but hardly groundbreaking.  You mentioned Dances With Wolves (basically the same plot).  There’s also Pocahontas, The Last Samurai, Dune, etc.

I enjoyed watching it.  I’m just saying that it’s just an enjoyable movie.  Nothing special except for the special effects.

  4. ...i hope i dont spoil it for people who havent seen the movie.

Don’t worry about that, because a. As Owen said, this plot line has been done to death; and b. I’m not going to see it…just as I’ve never seen E.T.

I like being the only person on the planet with that distinction.

  5. Wait—“Dune” had the same plot as “Dances with Wolves”?

I need an explanation of that one?

  6. Just took my daughter to Chipmunks.

Preview for some movie had bad business exec Brendan Fraser tearing down a forest to build a housing development…

Chipmunks had to save music program from budget cuts…

    Indoctrination starts early

  7. I have to agree with Owen.  The caricature of bad humans was complete when I heard the name of the mineral they were mining…Unobtainium.

    Mr. PP, never saw ET.

JB, perhaps the ‘same plot’ was incorrect.  Say rather ‘plot device’.  Human goes native to see the ‘right thing to do’ then goes against the great PTB(powers that be).  The amount that they are effective varies in the two movies, but attempting to stop the rape of the natives land/planet is the same as in Avatar.  As a matter of fact, Dune and Avatar are very similar except in scale.

This could have ben a Michael Moore production if he hired the same special effects guys.
