Assembly Resolution Wants People to Stop Saying “Swine” Flu

Seriously?  The Assembly passed a resolution about thisSeriously!?!?  There aren’t any more pressing matters?

State government and the media are being urged to stop using the term “swine flu” when referring to a strain of the influenza virus, under a nonbinding resolution the state Assembly is expected to pass Thursday.

The stigma is harmful to the state’s pork industry, said Rep. Phil Garthwaite (D-Fennimore), whose resolution encourages state agencies and media outlets to substitute “2009 H1N1 influenza” instead.

We seriously need a part time legislature.

  1. Oh, for cryin’ out loud.  It’s not like everyone doesn’t call it the swine flu anyways.  Sheesh!  Ridiculous waste of time.  Who calls it H1N1?  WHO?

  2. Speech police?  We can’t obscene books out of the childrens section at the library, but we can stop people from saying “swine”?  Good grief.

  3. Be careful what you ask for, Owen. I’m not so sure you want anything even remotely resembling the circus that is the part-time Texas Legislature. wink

  4. I’ll stop calling it “swine flu” when they stop calling a decrease in the percentage of increased spending a “budget cut”

  8. It does seem like they should have more pressing things to be spending their time on. Also, it’s not possible to contract H1N1 from pork meat, so it shouldn’t affect the pork industry. Of course the general public isn’t aware of / doesn’t believe that. So all we have to do is get the MSM to make a few reports about how pork meat is safe and everyone will be happily buying pork products again. Seems easier than getting everyone to stop saying swine.

  9. Who calls it H1N1?  WHO?

Seriously? I haven’t heard it called swine flu recently until this post. I’m in the Twin Cities, and it’s been H1N1 only up here since spring. The national media has been calling it H1N1 for months as well.

  10. It’s insensitive to call it Swine Flu because if a Muslim catches it he won’t go to heaven if he dies from it, but more importantly he can’t collect on his 72 virgins. Time to buy stock in surgical masks

  11. Opps, my mistake, that would mean the U.S. still operated under the free market system. I meant get ready for another tax increase to pay for the defective, Government “issued” surgical masks.

  14. Seriously, I recommend mandatory hard labor battalions for all members of the legislature who voted for this.  After all, idle hands are the devil’s workshop.

  15. Waste of time?  You bet.  And as another has said, folks likely will STILL call it swine flu.  But I like these kind of worthless actions.  Just think of the harm they could be causing if they were doing something serious.

BTW, on another topic, think I see some green shoots…..

Darn, it was only pond scum and mold.
