Assembly Passes Bill So That MPD Doesn’t Have to Pay Fired Felons

Excellent.

Madison - Milwaukee taxpayers would no longer pay fired police officers charged with serious crimes under a bill that passed the Assembly late Wednesday night.

In the legislative flurry that marks the winding down of the session, the Assembly late Wednesday passed bills to add information about mental health to a federal database for gun purchases; lower the state’s hunting age; and lift the ban on building nuclear power plants.

[...]

Under current law, fired officers are paid until their appeals are exhausted, a process that can take months or even years. Under a deal reached last week, pay would stop for officers who are fired and charged with felonies, Class A misdemeanors or Class B misdemeanors. Officers fired for rule violations would continue to be paid until their appeals are heard, something Democrats wanted to end as well.

  1. So, we’re now free to build nuclear power plants? Sweet I’ll get right on that.

  2. Oh boy I’m agreeing with Owen for the second time this week!  This is great news for Milwaukee.  That law cost us money and really set a back example…  Lets get this one sign sealed and delivered already.

  4. Yeah, now add all publicly paid positions to that list and you will have it right.  Weren’t you against stripping retirement benefits from a guy in jail for murder a few posts ago, Owen?

What is the difference I am missing?  Cops have a hard and dangerous job where lines will at times get crossed.  Why should the DOT guy keep his pension?  If he was caught in 1976, he wouldn’t have it.  We reward a non-dangerous public employee for getting away with it?
