Assembly Leadership On Right Track

I stand up and applaud the Assembly leadership for taking this stance for the taxpayers

“The goal here is not to be obstructionist for obstructionist sake,” Huebsch said. “In order for us to be successful for the taxpayers of the state of Wisconsin, we need our Democratic colleagues to realize people are taxed too high.”

[...]

Rep. Mark Gundrum (R-New Berlin) was one of the first Republicans to ask the Legislative Fiscal Bureau what would happen if leaders in the Capitol can’t agree on spending for the next two years. He said he’s willing to do whatever it takes to stop tax increases proposed by Doyle.

“I guarantee you that Wisconsin will not fall into the sea if we end up with no budget,” Gundrum said Friday. “Prisoners will not be let out of prison.”

Let’s support them so that they can hold their ground (on fees too).

  1. Mr. Boots and Sabers:  who are you to complain about flip flopping when you can’t decide whether to praise or crucify Assembly Republican leadership…first they’re on the right track…then you assail them on fees…then you attack them, then you salute them…make up your mind whether they are posturing or bluffing on taxes or if they really will produce a no tax increase budget…does raiding 600 million from the tobacco settlement constitute raising taxes or fees?  You’ve left them a gaping hole to do exactly what they have been criticizing Doyle for doing over the past four years——raiding funds instead of making tough spending decisions.  You’re too focused on taxes…concentrate more on spending, which leads to taxes to pay for the spending…they will not have the nerve to cut the big ticket items that would result in a reduction in taxes.  Republicans love prisons, and pork, and roadbuilders, and are afraid to stand up the WEAC or the UW, or local governments after TABOR.  That leaves them Medicaid as the one area they can cut—don’t hold your breath, remember on finance they expanded Family Care, and were ready to expand Senior Care with Wisconsin Care.  Leave it to Obey and Feingold to save them from themselves by extending Senior Care.  My bet is the tough talk about budget cuts now will melt into “raids” by July when they don’t have the stomach to hold the line on spending—-for GPS, domestic violence victims, county fairs, dental clinics, Al Ott pork, Chinese academics, Racine prenatal care, and everything else they approved in a bipartisan fashion over the past two months.

  2. The Senate, the Governor, and the media are against Mike Huebsch.  “Wilbur” (above) and his ilk bring nothing to the table.

What’s appropriate at this point is to stand with Huebsch.

  3. Hey Wilbur….

The level of praise or criticism for the speaker should be directly related to the words and actions of the speaker.

Owen has praised, blasted, and then praised the speaker for the smart, stupid and once again, smart things he has said in as many days.

If, God willing, something happened to the speaker on the road to Damascus, he is worthy of praise and deserves support.

On the other hand, if Huebsch turns out to be one of the Four Horsemen of Wisconsin’s Tax Hell Apocalypse, then a crucifixion (upside down of course) would be requisite.

You are right about one thing… it is all about spending. That is the $erpent in the garden.

  4. I applaud Rep. Gundrum…his point that “Wisconsin will not fall into the sea” needs to be trumpeted to counteract the media spin on this whole process.

I think Huebsch knows what he should do but, like most politicians, he is swaying with the political winds…we conservatives need to be his backbone and hold him straight.

wilbur - You are correct that spending is the problem (it always is), but until the Democrat’s never-ending tax supply (so they think) is cut off, the hard spending decisions will never even be debated.

  5. Gundrum better talk tough.  Remember he was convicted killer Steven Avery’s “go to” guy in the Legislature when Avery wanted a half million dollars from taxpayers for being locked up.  Gundrum was his cheerleader, even naming a bill after him.  Gundrum’s hard line now on the budget is laughable because he’s already voted for Doyle tax hikes in the last budget, and will again this time if Huebsch tells him to.

  6. Gundrum is the least of our conservative’s problems.  He’s a rock solid taxcutter who will do whatever he can to reverse Doyle’s devastating tax hikes.  The fact he’s in leadership gives me a ray of hope Republicans will deliver on the no tax pledge.

  7. Ummm I think there has been a lot of GOP inside squabbling to get us to this point.  It’s a good thing that the GOP is being led by folks that have some guts.  I have heard that the RPW has been all over this issue as well as the bloggers.  This is a good sign guys.
