Another Carjacking

There’s a reason why I roll through stop signs when I drive through the north side of Milwaukee.

Carjackers added insult to injury early today when they forced their victim to strip naked and shot him in the leg before stealing the sport utility vehicle he was driving on Milwaukee’s north side.

According to police, the 35-year-old victim was approached by three men - two of them with handguns - near N. 16th and W. Wright streets around 1:20 a.m. today. He was taken to a hospital, but his injuries were not expected to be life-threatening.

  1. The only time in my life I ever intentionally rolled through a stop sign was about 30 years ago - I had been west bound on Capital Drive, and went up the ramp to catch northbound Port Washington Road - this was early evening in summer, and there was some kind of club at that corner - for some reason it had been cleared out, and there was a humongous crowd all over the place - I found an “opening” and kept right on going - I remember thinking that even if I got a ticket for not stopping, it would have been worth it.

Different, but similar topic:  should Milwaukee have an ordinance that if you hit a pedestrian, it is not considered “hit & run” if you leave the area to escape to a safer place?  It seems like anytime a pedestrian (especially a child) has gotten hit, the drivers who get out of their car are subjected to a mob assault.

  2. Being afraid of black people is not a defense I would use in front of the judge, Owen.

  3. I’m not afraid of black people.  I’m afraid of gang-bangers and hooligans.  But it’s interesting how you equate crime with black folks.  Is there a little projection afoot?

  4. Gee when I read this post I thought Owen was making a point about a high crime neighborhood and one way he avoids being a victim.

    I agree.

  6. Nope, no need for concealed carry in Wisconsin.

  7. That’s right 45acp, because the Obamas of the world think you can’t be trusted to protect yourself. And, in the same breath, they claim that it’s the police’s job to do that for you (in spite of pretty heavy case law to the contrary).

So, when being carjacked in Milwaukee, just politely stop, and prepare to hand over your car and keys - as well as possessions and maybe even young children. Surely the police will be there in seconds to rescue you, right?

No? Well then courteously get out and gently ask for your belongings, including your cell phone. Those nice young men wouldn’t begrudge you making a call or two once they’ve gone, right?

Even if that fails, and you are stripped bare and shot in the leg, just hop on over to the nearest working pay phone and call 911. Or maybe some other citizen or passing motorist will lend a hand. Help will be there soon enough, and you will eventually be treated at a hospital if you don’t bleed to death first. The police will probably find your car before too terribly long, and you’ll more than likely walk normally again one day. What more could you really ask for? After all - the risk of potential harm to someone else (including your carjackers, who may be called “children” by the anti-gunners if they are under 21) if you were allowed to carry a weapon outweighs the slight inconvenience and pain you will suffer.

Or, if you don’t like that approach, come on down to Texas!

  8. around 1:20 a.m. today.

When I was a kid and I would get home that late my Mom would always ask me what I was doing out so late and what kind of people I was with that stayed out so late too.

Guess that this guys experience is part of the answer.

  9. Why is it that the only reason I care about this story is that I’m wondering what the driver was doing down there at that time of morning in a car that belongs to someone else?

  10. Keep thinking that Owen.  I am sure it makes you feel better.

  11. Owen, do you spend a lot of time down on 16th and Meinecke at 1:20 a.m.?

I’m just wondering, because using this incident as justification for what you do seems like a big stretch.
