Ann Coulter Engages in Grotesque Attack on Edwards

Here is the video of Ann Coulter basically calling John Edwards a “faggot.”

I, for one, utterly reject Coulter’s shameful and childish attack.  It was uncalled for and completely reprehensible.  Furthermore, it does absolutely nothing but hurt the causes that she purports to support because her grade school remarks are the only thing that will be reported out of CPAC, thus saddling the entire conservative movement with her prattle.  Also, the children in the audience who applauded her remarks should hang their heads in shame.  Most of them were college kids.  Coulter has already lost more mature conservatives.  Hopefully, they will grow out of their hero worship of Coulter and begin to take their espoused philosophy seriously.

I must say that I am proud of my conservative brethren here.  I am seeing an immense push back against Coulter’s remarks from the stalwarts in the conservative community.  (Sean Hackbarth at The American Mind is cataloging some of it.)  Coulter is already ostracized by much of the conservative movement, and her remarks of this week will only isolate her further.  She has no place in the serious conservative community.

  1. Bravo.  I only wish someone could explain to me why she’s on TV every other day, her column carried by newspapers across the country (including in my hometown), and her books are bestsellers.  Meanwhile, John Edwards hires a foul-mouthed blogger to occupy some minor post in his campaign and it’s critically important news.  C’mon.

Anyway, I’m glad to read this here, Owen.  I had a discussion with another conservative blogger in the area who dismissed her remarks as mere “satire,” and insisted that her work is the equivalent of Al Franken - which is utter nonsense.

  2. Your blogger friend was partially right.  Coulter’s antics are akin to some of those engaged in by Franken, Maher, and others on the left.  But that doesn’t mean that we should accept that kind of crap on our side.

  3. I’m hard pressed to think of anything Al Franken has ever said that is as offensive as the mainstay material of Coulters’ schtick.  I think there was one lame chapter in Big Fat idiot where he mocked right-wing chickenhawks like Limbaugh in rather adolescent terms, but other than that, i’ve been reading his books and even heard his radio show a few times.  They’re not even in the same league.

  4. Good on you, Owen.

  5. Scott, what was the title of that Al Franken book again?  The one that contains “one lame chapter” where he mocked right-wing chickenhawks in adolescent terms?

I can’t Stand Coulter and I’ll admit that she is worse than Franklin, Moore or Limbaugh, but they’re all basically the same.  They really are.

  6. That’s called “irony,” jesus.  It’s ironic because Limbaugh made a career out of hateful ad hominem attacks on people.  That’s what makes it funny.  I’ve used this example before: it woudn’t be satire and funny if someone wrote a book called “Bob Dole is a Gimpy Viagra User.”  It would just be mean-spirited and hateful.  See the difference?

  7. I didn’t say it wasn’t funny.  It is funny.  But what coulter said is a little funny too.  It’s less funny, and more mean-spirited, but it’s the same ballpark.  Titling a book “Bob Dole is a Gimpy Viagra User” probably wouldn’t be funny because Bob Dole is awesome.  It might be funny if Bob Dole wrote the book.  Then it would be satire, but not irony.

I don’t think Franken’s book title is ironic either.  It would be ironic to call Rush a skinny genius.  He IS a big fat idiot (or at least Al Franken believes he is) so calling him one is not ironic.  The idea of using an ad hominem attack against a person that makes his career out of ad hominem attacks isn’t ironic either.  It might be “satire” or it might be “fitting” or “poetic justice,” but it’s not ironic.  If Franken wanted an ironic title for his book, he could have called it “Rush Limbaugh is an assett to political discourse” or something like that.

Me asking you the title of that book when I clearly already knew it is also irony—Socratic irony.

  8. Fine, Coulter’s remark was stupid, but do you hear the liberals condemming other liberals hateful comments?  Of course not because they don’t have the guts and/or intellect to condem the liberal’s hateful comments.

  9. Dan, what does what liberals ay about other liberals have to do with how Owne reacted to Coulter’s comment?  Are you suggesting that liberals and conservatives aren’t exactly the same?

  10. Actually it just makes me want me to spank her even more.

  11. “Most of them were college kids.”  But i thought that all learning institutions were filling kids’ heads with liberal tripe to the point that there were no conservative young’ns anymore!

  12. We should condemn her comments.  After all, aren’t we conservatives supposed to be more moral, ethical and reasoned?

If she was going for “show” she missed badly.

Her remarks were crude and uncalled for.

She ought to apologize and do it now with contrition.

  13. Coulter has a history of making racist and bigoted comments. I just hope that many consevatives stop saying “liberals do it too” and start criticizing her for remarks. She is a racist and a bigot according to my opinion and conservatives need to distance themselves from her.

  14. That’s nice Tim, but liberals embrace bigots sleaze.  Bigots like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, hypocrits like Al Gore, criominals like Bill Clinton and William Jefferson. and potential criminals and certainly sleazy politicians like Doyle.  They also love the liberal bigots in Hollywood.  So there is a huge difference between liberals and conservatives- the conservatives will be critical of conservatives that act like jerks and liberals love their sleaze.  There is a moral difference between the two.

  15. _______ You just made my point, you and the other ______ just can’t say _______or any other _________ like _____________________are sleazy without bringing up another subject.  Is it you are not capable, have the intellect or what?

Dan, Sound familar, I’ll let you fill in the blanks.

  16. Dan, Let me sharpen up the focus for you.

  17. Does anyone rember Trent Lott?  In the last few years we have the majorty leader in the Senate deposed by his own party for insensitve remarks and we have a growing ground swell against one of the most well known conservative authors by conservatives for her remarks.

Can anyone give an example of something similar on the liberal side?  Let’s start with Senators Byrd and Kennedy.

  18. Oh and lets not forget that Mahr just made headlines for saying that he wished the assanation attempt on Cheney had been sucessful.  Where is the outcry from the Daily Kos crowd?

  19. Ann Coulter supports the cause of Ann coulter first and foremost.  Viewed in that sense ithis whole thing may help her cause.
