Anarchists Meet in Waldo

I dunno… sounds like a lot of organization for anarchists

Waldo - Some 150 anarchists from throughout the United States and Canada descended on a strip of private land this week in this Sheboygan County village for four days of workshops, including some focused on strategizing for demonstrations at the upcoming Democratic and Republican national conventions.

The 2008 CrimethInc. Convergence was the sixth annual communal campout organized by CrimethInc. Ex-Workers’ Collective, an international underground network that since the mid-1990s has published widely read anarchist texts such as “Recipes for Disaster: An Anarchist Cookbook.”

I’m guessing that getting everyone to show up for the workshops on time is an issue.

  1. Boy, that’s the second weird local thing I read in two days.  In yesterday’s West Bend Daily News, there was an article “Local Nonprofits Get $382,975 In Grants”, from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.  It mentions $75,000 to Boys & Girls Club of West Bend, $45,000 to the West Bend Sunrise Jazz Festival, and $30,000 to The Scooter Foundation for a peace march.

Considering how “low-budget” our July 4th & Memorial Day parades are (Terry Vrana does an outstanding job with minimal resources, by the way!), I figured for $30,000 this is going to be one hell of an event.

I suspect the Daily News mixed something up - I’m not sure that this is a West Bend thing, other than the funding came from West Bend Mutual Insurance Company Charitable Fund.

I “googled” the Scooter Foundation (nothing to do with the Shriners) - it appears to be a Milwaukee organization trying to find solutions to gun issues and it is named after a fellow named “Scooter” who was found shot in the head in his home in Brewers Hill neighborhood.

  2. I think they’d show up on time if they promised to serve punch and pie.  More people will show up if you say you’re serving punch and pie!
