Ammo for Deer Hunting Plentiful

Good!

Wisconsin gun deer hunters should find adequate supplies of ammunition this fall despite shortages of some bullet calibers in the U.S., retailers and firearms market watchers say.

At least one retailer, though, is urging hunters to buy their ammo early.

Availability of hunting ammunition is a big deal in Wisconsin, where 605,890 residents - nearly 11% of the state’s population - purchased gun deer licenses in 2008, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

Sales of ammunition and firearms have defied an economic downturn in which consumers have sharply curtailed spending. Purchases of firearms and ammo have skyrocketed since last fall and are only now showing signs of leveling off, experts say.

  1. This is a news item?

You need more than one round to kill a deer?

  2. Did you see the price for .380 Auto in the pic accompanying the article?  How about the price for the .380 Auto JHPs?

    Holy moly. Batman..

  3. This means that none of you hunters have any excuse not to return from hunting with at least one deer.  Put down your Blackberries and your laptops and get rid of those unwanted road obstacles, dammit.  The DNR and the state of Wisconsin have given you a job to do   Just do it!

  4. James - the deer herd is actually at historic lows to the point where many people are not hunting this year.  Check it out by contacting the Hunters Rights Coalition.  What you will find out is that the DNR’s current methodology for counting deer is really, really off.

  5. Shotgun and larger rifle rounds were never that hard to find. Sure more expensive than normal but not hard to get.

  6. Hey Joe…

Everybody i talk to who does a modicum of scouting.  And even puts-out a game camera will tell you there is a plenitude of deer.

I think think the HRC needs to hunt where the deer are.

Or are they just plain lazy…

  7. Swamp Gas, where do you hunt? In the last number of years the serious hunters in my camp are getting skunked (at least opening weekend, rest of the season they bag their deer elsewhere). The DNR has been reducing the number of doe tags and this year our unit is allowed 0 doe tags and one next to us just a handful..

  8. Why is the price of some ammunition so high right now?

  9. Marcus…

We hunt right here at the Campingplatz.  (There should be a link here to one of my blogs).

Our deer herd is both a blessing and a curse.  Way too many for a tree farmer but plenty enough for a hunter.
