Afghanistan More Complex than Iraq, But Iraq Is The One That’s Unwinnable

While I don’t disagree with President Obama on this statement...

He said Afghanistan is a more complex problem than Iraq. “Iraq was actually easier than Afghanistan. It’s easier terrain,” Obama told Kroft.

...it’s interesting in light of some of his past statements

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 21 — Senator Barack Obama said Tuesday that even if the military escalation in Iraq was showing limited signs of progress, efforts to stabilize the country had been a “complete failure” and American troops should not be entangled in the sectarian strife.

So… according to Obama, Iraq was unwinnable.  He opposed the surge and advocated for a rapid withdrawal.  Obviously he didn’t think we won, so he was just abandoning a lost cause.  Clearly, Obama was wrong because Iraq is more stable and more free than it has been in many years.  Yet, Afghanistan more complex and Obama is sending in a surge there.  If Obama thought that Iraq was unwinnable and that the surge was doomed to fail, how does he reconcile that with sending a surge into Afghanistan?   If Iraq was less complex and unwinnable, how can we win in a more complex Afghanistan with the same strategy?  Did he learn from the surge in Iraq?

  1. Did he learn from the surge in Iraq

    Learn?  Be serious.

While he states that ‘we can’t just let terrorists [sit in Afghanistan] and plot to [blow up US assets], he RELEASES terror suspects from Gitmo.

    INTO THE US!!

“Learning” is not Obama’s strong suit.

  2. Let’s face it, the only way any of these Democrats could convince the few remaining Reagan Democrats to vote for them was to pick some war they actually might support.

So by default they all said “Afghanistan!” because they could score points against Bush for not getting Bin Laden and at the same time claim they were hawks on defense.

And now that Obama is in power, he’s got to stick with that line.  Especially since Bush looks better and better each day on Iraq.

You see us worried about Iran’s nuclear capability right now?.  Just imagine if we had Sadaam going on CNN talking about his bomb making capability everyday?

  3. Afghanistan is unwinnable, because the Obama administration is already in disfavor there.  You can’t win if you kill the rest of the old enemy regime only to find you have made enemies of the new regime…
