The Planned Parenthood bill for state takeover of sex education in Wisconsin is being debated in the Assembly right now. You can watch here. Call your Assemblyperson.
UPDATE: It passed with all of the Republicans and one Democrat voting against it.
I’m sorry, but I read the bill and I didn’t see in it where it was referenced as the Planned Parenthood Bill. Maybe I’m missing something?
This is the bill that Planned Parenthood has been shopping around to virtually every state in the nation. You don’t actually think that every bill is written by legislators, do you?
I also have read the bill and see very little wrong with its language. In fact the section that requires that the fact being taught are medically accurate is plain common sense. So what is so wrong with this bill?
No, I don’t believe that every bill is written by legislators. Some times they are written by special interest groups. I have evidence of bills that have been written by lawyers for such groups. Some which helped bring down the economy. I’m guessing you have first hand knowledge that this bill was written by Planned Parenthood.
I read the complete bill and don’t have a problem with it. It promotes the , “Age?appropriate” means suitable to a particular age group of pupils based on the developing cognitive and emotional capacity of and behaviors typical for the age group. It even promotes, “5. The benefits of and reasons for abstaining from sexual activity. Instruction under this subdivision shall stress the value of abstinence as the most reliable way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.”
It even allows a school board to opt out from providing any human growth and development instruction to pupils enrolled in the school district.

Does anyone want to parent any more? This is not the schools job - at all, ever, to any degree.
Joe, parents should be involved with educating their children about health and development at home. But, as hard as it might seem, many parents aren’t as adept at this as you evidently are, and you should be commended for doing a good job as a parent. There are a lot of parents that are uncomfortable in this area, and many times don’t have accurate information about this area, or have all the available information needed to teach their children about health and development. Teaching it, or not teaching it in school, shouldn’t take away a parents part in being a mentor and roll model for their children. Open dialog at home is still the best way for children to develop into fine and responsible adults.
Here’s the problem with the bill. It removes the freedom of a community to choose how they want to write their HG&D curriculum. While sex ed is not mandated in Wisconsin, if this bill goes all the way to Doyle, there will be only one way to teach HG&D. One way. No choices. Sorry, but I don’t appreciate “the hill” telling our community’s HG&D committee they have to chuck their curriculum and do it “their way.”
Pat, This bill was written by PP and received the support of enough Reps. (Grigsby and Taylor co-wrote) to present. You could do the same. So could I. It all about the money. Each session was well attended by PP and NARAL people.
Ginny, just saying that Planned Parenthood wrote the bill isn’t enough.
“Each session was well attended by PP and NARAL people. “
Each session was also well attended by people who were opposed to it. And they’ve been quite vocal about their dislike for it.
Again, I read the bill again and see it fair and balanced and would be overall beneficial for the children of this state.
The following quote is from your most recent site: http://www.eagleforumwc.blogspot.com/
“Planned Parenthood has effectively trampled on Your values”
Who’s values are you referring to?
Did not have to read the bill to be against it. I’m against almost any federal or state mandate. Government has injected itself into our lives in too many places and at too high of a level. This would seem best suited to be addressed at the local level. Perfect job for your school board, not the state.
We’ve let the Feds and the state way overstep their bounds to the point where we don’t even notice they are so far beyond what they were ever intended to be.
If there is an op-out provision, I don’t see any problem with the bill. I guess I’m one of those parents who was not real knowledgable discussing the mechanics and scientific aspects of sexuality with my children. The moral aspects I can take care of just fine. There are two separate aspects of sex education.
Sex education, all aspects of sex education, need to be taught. I remember the quote but can’t remember which bombastic right-wing moralist said it; “Children shouldn’t learn about incest in school, they need to learn about incest in the home.”
Every time a freedom is taken away from a local community by the government, you should be seeing red flags.
Of course, Pat doesn’t feel that way. And to answer your question about the EF posting, Pat, “obviously not yours.”
Ginny, I don’t understand your hostility??
You don’t know how I feel about our freedoms.
West Bend has the option to opt out. Good adults could hold classes for the kids that would allow the community to control what is information they want their childrent to have. Perhaps the Citizens for Common Sense would be able to do this for the kids.
And, I still would like to know exactly what the “Your Values” are you advocate for everyone.
You know there are a quite a few things that are Hard to do as a parent and this is one of them. I suggest if you cannot talk to your kids about nature and morality of sex, your kids are going to have bigger problems. For all those who would like the government to be more intrusive, there are plenty of places in the world where you can go, and be told every move to make in your life regarding your children, your work, and your lives. It depends on what control you want to let them have. Here in the US, why do people want to change the way this government is working to match other places that are crappy to live. I have never understood this. I guess I never will.
I take a hard line and ask you to show me where it is my responsibility to raise your children and educate them. I understand that we do not want a bunch of blithering idiots running around but have you looked at MPS lately? Have you looked at public education in general? Do you see where Wisconsin in general is at in education? Now we should teach the little brats about sex. Katie bar the door here comes the population explosion, and then the same people I bet will be wondering why the government is not taken a larger role trying to figure out where all these babies are coming from….Wait let me pay even higher taxes to feed educate babysit YOUR kids and YOUR grandkids, Please.
Grow up; take responsibility for your own kids. Some of are getting sick and tired of taken on your responsibilities.
Jack
PS I have 4 kids in private schools and all but one have straight As. NO help from anyone. Imagine that.
Pat:
Some interesting Planned Parenthood info to help you understand AB458 and the driving force behind it.

The 2009-10 Wisconsin Legislative Session brings great opportunities for women’s health. PPAWI is excited to embark on this new legislative session and is pursuing a strong pro-active Prevention First agenda.
I would like to know same about your hostility, Pat. Could you show me where I said I advocate for everyone’s values? That is, quite obviously, not possible. Nor do I claim to. If you don’t feel that I represent “your” values, don’t read the blog.
Gee Ginny, I don’t know what I said that was hostile toward you I was asking what values your were talking about when you post on your blog, “Planned Parenthood has effectively trampled on Your values and Your rights tonight.” I guess I shouldn’t have used the word “everyone”, and I apologize for drawing that assumption. So, exactly who’s values are you referring to when you say, “Your Values”? And could you define what those values are?
Pat, quit talking so ridiculously. Honestly.
Ginny, I thought it would be impossible for you to answer my question as I don’t think you know the answer. I’ll pray for you.
Thanks! I appreciate that, Pat! ![]()
