A Soulless America

I was going to comment on this quote from Michelle Obama:

We have lost the understanding that in a democracy, we have a mutual obligation to one another — that we cannot measure the greatness of our society by the strongest and richest of us, but we have to measure our greatness by the least of these. That we have to compromise and sacrifice for one another in order to get things done. That is why I am here, because Barack Obama is the only person in this who understands that. That before we can work on the problems, we have to fix our souls. Our souls are broken in this nation.

But as is par for the course, Rachel Lucas does it in a far more entertaining fashion than I could hope to muster.

Did you hear that, plebs? YOUR SOULS ARE BROKEN. Obama’s gonna fix ‘em right up and then maybe start working on the problems if there’s enough time. He is the only one who understands you. Just like Jesus. Get on your knees and await your assimilation, you hopeless sinners.

Oh and by the way. I can’t think of anything more idiotic than measuring the greatness of America by her poorest and weakest. What, we’re only as great as the meth-head crack-whore welfare sows in trailer parks and housing projects? Only as great as that homeless guy downtown who eats his boogers and spends all his panhandlin’ proceeds on hooch? Oh hell no. No, no, no.

  1. Kudos to Rachael.  Couldn’t have said it better myself!

  2. The merit of the argument not withstanding, I have to thank the largely religious right for using anti-religious arguments to criticize Obama.

Again political hacks prove themselves nearly as entertaining as Lost.

Just more proof that if Jesus Christ returned to the United States and said everything that Church tells me he did, the religious right would mock him as a communist.

    It’s as simple as that.

  3. Rachel’s response reminds me of the Coulter video when she was saying Jews needed to upgrade into Christianity.

Total nonsense from someone desperately seeking attention.

Damn, if he is th eonly one who understands this, this mean he is either smarter than all of us, he is crazier than all of us or a little of both.
I bet the Pope, the Dali Lama, liberals and conservatives are feeling pretty bad about now not knowing what Obama knows.

  5. I don’t understand what she means by that! Is she living in an illusion? Had she been away from America for a long time? Does she have proof for this claim?

  6. A tad hyperbolic, but since Reagan has been president this touches on what many people feel. As a country we have been a bit into ourselves and the reach for greatness has been shortened. Where are our man on the moon projects? Thinking big has been smothered in tax cuts.

  7. Bush proposed a manned mission to Mars and was ridiculed.  Plus, we’re taxing and spending more than ever.  Did you see the three trillion dollar budget?

  8. Also a little bit telling that you see the sould of our nation resting in government.

  9. This is to be expected from the wife of an avowed business hating Communist.

  10. Well Owen, I wouldn’t mind see it coming from another sector (corporate, religious), but they all represent—sectors. Government is the one actor that can represent all of us.

Let’s face it. Profits, catering to shareholders and layoffs don’t make a spine tingling vision. But I’ll admit there are companies like GE that are pointing us to the horizon.

And Bush was ridiculed because this was unable, unlike Kennedy, to pull it off because it looked like a fall back.

Neither does being told that the government is going to oversee more and more of our lives and take more of our money.  hmmm

And how can a soul rest in something that has been declared secular?

  12. I totally agree with you what ever the hell your name is in post #11.

Your second sentence pretty much describes the Bush administration.

People are looking for leaders where ever they can find them. For a country to be great someone has to create a vision. Reagan did it with his quest to topple world Communism, though it is debated what exactly he did other than drink the Russkies under the table when it came to defense spending.

And hey. It didn’t hurt his buddies with the defense contractors either.

And unlike doctrinaire conservatives, they don’t rule out where ever they might be found. The rest of us are not hung up if these people happen to be in government.
After all, it was government that helped win WWII, helped build the middle class in the 50’s and the 60’s and helped restore Europe after WWII.

With that, I’ll just type my password below. Ahead.

  13. Perhaps she’s referring to “whatever you do unto the least of these, you do unto me” when she refers to greatness. The right seems to want to claim Christianity as its very own, but its doesn’t seem to want to follow Jesus’ own words very often.

  14. I thought she was just mangling “we are only as strong as our weakest link.”  Or, at least, a chain is.
