82-Year-Old Crashes Through Airport Perimeter Fence

Tell me again why we don’t test the elderly more often before giving them a driver’s license?

An 82-year-old Cudahy woman accidentally veered off E. Layton Ave. and crashed through the perimeter fence at Mitchell International Airport this afternoon, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

Heavy rain was falling when the crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. just east of S. Pine Ave., said sheriff’s Sgt. Phil Wentzel.

The woman was traveling east when she lost her way in the rain, veered off the road and drove through the chain-link fence, Wentzel said.

The woman did not realize she had driven through the fence and continued driving east on an airport access road until one of her tires went flat near a cluster of hangars, where she was met by sheriff’s deputies, Wentzel said.

  1. Yes - but reading the whole article - the ticketing officer got it right - and required the driver to undergo a written test and a driving test with DMV before being able to drive again. My bet is that she either a) won’t pass or b) won’t go. Problem solved in this case - just glad no one was hurt.

  2. Agreed, but it should be routine - not only imposed after an accident.

  3. Every time I hear something like this, I think of how dead on the South Park episode “Grey Dawn” was.

  4. We don’t test more often because it costs money.  It’s the same reason we don’t truly train teens anymore.

There is a kook fringe who want taxes cut low enough that basic services can’t be provided.  Then when the consequences of those cuts come to light they complain about the failure of the government.

It’s one of those “self-fulfilling prophecies.”

  5. Grumps, that’s baloney for three reasons.

    1) We have never tested old folks more in Wisconsin and every time it is proposed, it is shot down because the old folks are a powerful voting block and don’t want to be tested more.  The opposition is never about money.  Since we’ve never done it, it was never a “basic service” that was cut due to financial reasons.

    2) Taxes have never been cut in Wisconsin.  They have always gone up.  It’s just a matter of how much.

    3) Those of us on the kook fringe do not oppose funding basic services.  We oppose the rest of the wasteful spending.  We’d be happy to support a training program if folks on your side would ever let us cut spending somewhere else.

  6. I’m amazed that she went through a chain link fence and didn’t realize it!
