27-Year-Old Teacher Gets 25 Days for Sexually Assaulting 14-Year-Old

This is a complete disgrace for the legal system in Wisconsin.

A former St. Francis math teacher pleaded guilty Tuesday to having sexual contact with a 14-year-old student, and was sentenced to 25 days in jail and two years’ probation.

Kelly Marie Sweet, 27, has also permanently relinquished her Wisconsin teaching license. She was ordered to register as a sex offender for the duration of her probation.

  1. I guess you should take that up with the DA who offered the plea.  But clearly, if the DA pled all the way down to fourth degree, the DA had concerns about winning this at trial.  If push comes to shove, I’m guessing it would’ve been the kid’s word against hers without any evidence.  And that the accused took the kid home and didn’t try to keep him against his will is what probably helped her the most.

Also, two thumbs down to the parents for consenting to the child spending alone time with a teacher on a purely social basis.  Wrong of her to ask, maybe, but dumb of them to repeatedly agree.  If the kid’s messed up now, his parents were certainly a contributing factor.  This is as much a lesson in bad parenting as anything.

  2. Just trying to connect the dots here…

Good Looking (at least in my opinion.)

    Female Judge. In....

Milwaukee County (Not exactly known as a law and order city when it comes to the court system.

Daddys a Lawyer, whose firm I am sure represented his daughter, and knew both the prosecutor and the Judge… and as such was able to bail his daughter out of trouble, (just like he has been doing his whole life I’m Sure) knowing that he will forever have a paralegal who cannot or will not quit, because he has this “little incident” to hang over her, to keep her in line....

Yes she should have gotten some serious jail time, but on the other hand I’m thinking that family get togethers’ and life at the office won’t exactly be easy either…

  3. Different rules for female offenders rather than male offenders - always been that way.

  4. Yup.  No way a male teacher in this situation with a 14 year old female gets a similar sentence.

  5. I would have rather seen her do jail time than lose her license.  So what is the big deal?  She can’t teach, but she can still practice pedophilia because the courts let her go free.  sick

Not necessarily. Milwaukee County’s DA’s office has a long history of offering weak, slap-on-the-wrist plea deals simply to bolster the ol’ conviction rate. This may just be another one to avoid the spectacle of a trial. But I do agree the DA’s office shares the blame for such a slap on the wrist.

Also, two thumbs down to the parents for consenting to the child spending alone time with a teacher on a purely social basis.

Agree absolutely. Extremely poor judgment by the parents. While I don’t blame them for the sexual assault, they certainly did not use good judgment here in allowing the socialization between student and teacher.

Different rules for female offenders rather than male offenders - always been that way.

Again, I agree. I have spoken with men I know to be law-and-order conservatives with children who take the “Hubba! Hubba!” approach to one of their sons getting their freak on with a good-looking female teacher — they consider it real sex education — but who would blow a gasket if their teenage daughter was involved with a good looking male teacher. You try to point out the flaming hypocrisy of those positions to no avail.

  7. Following up on Peter’s point regarding “flaming hypocrisy”:

If this was a Catholic priest, the peasants would grab their torches & pitch forks and storm the courthouse.  An equal amount of public outrage should follow from offenses such as this.
